Description
Commonwealth Brewing Co was founded as the manifestation of one family’s love for making uncompromising, exceptional beer and sharing the experiences with friends. The spark of inspiration was ignited during a revelatory European brewery and beer hall tour while Jeramy was visiting Natalie, who was traveling (aka wandering) abroad for two years. But it wasn’t until 2013, after years of stove top excellence, beer geekery and a house too full of brewing equipment, that it was time to fully embrace the craft beer lifestyle.

Commonwealth opened Sept 6, 2015 as a result of next level commitment, mild insanity, family, friends and a profound sense of purpose. Since then, we’ve grown into a tight knit band of like minded people who believe beer should be adventurous, diverse, extremely drinkable, and defy boundaries. We honor farmhouse traditions, huge hop American styles, and the complex depths of wild fermentations.

Located inside a fully renovated, former fire and rescue station built in 1962 and nestled in a funky beach cottage community (flip flops mandatory) on the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia Beach, our facility is complete with a double garage bay tasting room, private event spaces, an outdoor beer garden, and a conditioned barrel cellar housing hundreds of barrels of mixed fermentations for long term aging.

Lots of grapefruit, lemon. Tangerine is less apparent. I'm not really into fruit IPAs, and this one is probably way too fruit for me. Hazy orange pour with decent head. Grapefruit tang finish. Can.

Yikes, this a a rough one for Commonwealth. They don't often miss, but this is a big one. Swampy kind of aroma. Tons of caramel, some rotten mango. Pours hazy yellow without much head. Green onion and swampy malt in the finish. Tap at Fairfax location.

Mango and tangerine. Pours murky yellow with decent head. Finish is a bit boozy, a bit of green onion. While most of their 8.3% double hazies are on point, I feel like some of these lower ABV ones lack balance. Tap at Fairfax location.

Mango, blackberry and some off-tasting vanilla. Not sure this one comes together super well. Pours radioactive ruby red. Syrupy sweet finish. Tap at brewery in Fairfax.

I like this one better than some of the other variants as the banana is light, almost non detectable. Vanilla is big, as is the cinnamon. Plus, the cinnamon is amplified by the amburana barrel. I'm not sure why you'd bother adding cinnamon if you aged it on amburana--kind of defeats the purpose of the amburana natural cinnamon-like flavour? Or disguises it at least. Bourbon as well. Bitter caramel sweet and tangy finish. Tap at brewery in Fairfax.
