Very nice. Lots of peach smell here. The bretta is light but good. Pours cloudy orange with good head and lacing. Nice stuff. Finishes light bitter and sour. On draft at Volo for Zwanze Day.

(Draught at Bellwoods, Sep 11 2013) Pours a deep burnt orange colour, small dense white head faded fast, little lace. Aroma an interesting combination of hops/yeast/malt. Definitely fruity and floral, but reminded me of temperate pit fruit notes - peach, apricot, maybe yellow plum. Slight clove/spice character, bit of honey malt sweetness. Flavour is again fruity, estery, with more of the pit fruit character along with sweetness from the malt to start, before the yeast takes over a bit with some slight spice, on the finish there is some light hop bitterness and a little bit of booze along with a lingering sweetness. Body fairly full, carb soft, feels somewhat rich. This is definitely a tasty beer, the hop profile wasn’t as in-your-face as DIPA would normally be and the yeast was powerful, making this come across as more of a hoppy Belgian. Very good for what it is, sweetish but fruity, still prefer the Bellwoods version though!

(Draught at the brewpub, Aug 31 2013) Tapped just as I was wrapping up a session of beers so I wasn’t in prime condition for tasting! Poured a dark gold to pale orange colour, with a large lacy white head that persisted a bit. Aroma a good blend of vinous chardonnay character with pale grains and a fair bit of yeast, not a huge amount of oak character. Flavour was vinous up front, good extraction of the chard, with a bit of a white wine tartness as well. Slight bit of oak mid-palate, some grain, saison yeast giving a powdery/spicy character but also sweentess from the malt building. Still finished reasonably dry, refreshing. Body medium, carbonation soft but effervescent. A good barrel-aged saison, I thought it was an interesting comparison to GLB’s Gary but think I prefer the latter. Wish I’d had a sample when I was fresher!

This is really excellent. A super floral Belgian IIPA. Pours orange without much head or lacing. Super floral smell off the bat gives a great understanding of the powers of Belgian yeast. Not entirely sure this fits the profile of a IIPA but it makes for a great beer. I think I’m more partial to this one than the American yeast version because I’m a Belgo-phile. Belgian yeast tends to override the hop profile in terms of citrus subtleties here. Pours light cloudy orange with ok head and lacing. Awesome. On tap at Bellwoods.

(Draught at the brewpub, Aug 31 2013) Poured a clear deep amber with a thin off-white head. Aroma has some bourbon up front but it’s fairly soft and restrained rather than in the face, vanilla and oak with a somewhat wine-like fruit character from the malt, light caramel and faint grain, and a relatively restrained bit of grassy hop resin. Flavour is sweet up front, a bit of tree fruit/grape in brown sugar character but fairly soft malt, bourbon is there but mostly restricted to vanilla and a bit of wood, while a nice helping of fresh grassy hops/resin kicks in mid-palate and along with the somewhat prominent booze, dries out the beer with a fairly subtle grain character from the wheat also there on the finish. Body full but silky-smooth, soft carbonation, alcohol heat. Fair amount of complexity, balance between barrel, hops and wheat malts nicely handled, drinkable given the booze. More restrained than a young US barleywine in style, the wheat and the ageing give this more of an aged barelywine feel. Good stuff.

(Draught at the brewpub, Aug 31 2013) Pours an inky black with a barely-there head of whitish bubbles around the rim. Aroma is really vinous, a little woody vanilla, light herbal/spicy character, quite Pinot really, but mixed with a little dusty dry malt character as well. The palate was a bit more balanced between wine and stout - some grape/red fruit character of the wine, a touch sweet-tart at first, slightly woody with a cocoa powder/coffee character and light restrained roast, finishes with some lingering wine notes and tannic/astringent quality along with a bit of roast dryness. Body only moderate but silky, with very light carbonation, very slight booze for the abv. Elegant, balanced, wine-like, with a very restrained character for an impy stout as a base beer. Pity it’s not winter, this would be great fireside sipper.

(Draught at the brewpub, Aug 31 2013). Pours black with dark brown highlights and a decent head of pale tan bubbles. Aroma is very bourbon-forward, bourbon and vanilla sweetness, some light chocolate, fairly faint roast. On the palate the bourbon is again to the fore, rich and woody and slightly sweet, followed by dry roast malts, milk chocolate and a slight creamy oat feel and taste to the middle of the palate. Finishes with lingering sweetish bourbon atop some light roast coffee bitterness. Interesting that unlike many bourbon beers the char of the barrel doesn’t come through, only roast from the malts. Body is medium but silky and smooth, carbonation had faded by the time I got to it. This is a really nice breakfast porter, if a little bourbon-heavy. Booze was relatively hidden despite the board saying 8.5%.

(Draught at the brewpub, Aug 31 2013) Pours a slightly hazy medium gold with a dense head of white froth and loads of lace. Aroma is richly mango up front, with grassy hoppy notes and some light bready malt/yeast saison character. Flavour fruity mango up front, maybe a bit of citrus in there, but not as assertively fruit-forward as the nose. Grassy vegetal hops quickly become apparent alongside a bready, yeasty saison body with very light yeast spice. It’s pretty dry to begin with and dries out more, with a light hop bitterness to the finish along with a slight yeasty funk. Body average to full for a saison, carbonation fairly restrained, good for the style. Like it, refreshing, wish they’d not run out and I could’ve got a growler for a sunny afternoon.

(Draught at brewpub, Aug 31 2013) Pours a clear pale yellow with the barest head of white bubbles, no lace. Aroma is sour-tart, lemon juice, some grainy notes in the background as it warmed. Flavour is clean sour-tart lemon juice up front, light but bracing acidity (slightly lactic?). In the late part of the palate the rye kicks in, grainy and slightly bready and peppery, cutting a lot of the sourness out. Kind of a tale of two beers, really. Carb is soft but the body quite light, perhaps too watery rather than crisp. I’m glad I tried it, but also just as a taster, because I like a bit more complexity in my sours and I don’t think I would’ve enjoyed a whole pint of this

Looks and tastes like chardonnay in a big way. Pours pale blonde, though not as clear as a white wine. Wine barrel overtakes the berliner weiss sense here. Kind of messy. Tap at volos.
