About
Proud Early Bird of Craft Beer - The Big Rock Story
17,000 years ago, a glacier carried a huge rock onto the Alberta prairies where none like it had been before. This "big rock" is the glacial erratic we take our name from, as no doubt, our founder's notion of creating a craft brewery in 1985 was a bit erratic at the time.
The rooster represents our early arrival as craft brewers. It's also a bit of a nod to the "cock of the walk" bravura that Ed McNally had when he started Big Rock Brewery.
We craft our beer with our brewmasters’ skill and imagination, utilizing local ingredients and innovative processes, all rooted in Ed McNally's original passion for excellence and in doing things differently and better.

Drank at Distortion bar in Calgary, October 2016 when we played there. Biscuit malt aromas with hints of soapy hops. Very mild tasting malts. Was the cheapest beer in the bar. Did the job that night. About it.

Billed as a CDA, this is dark brown, thin head, chocolate and leafy hops on the nose. Bitter, earthy character...basic example with a leafy note.

Bit of a dull amber, thick head. Has a strong new oak note, with some leafy hops. Similar palate, with a fairly yeasty note. The robust oak character is a lot of fun.

On tap at Big Rock Urban, pours a cloudy yellow with a small white head. Aroma is loaded with citrus and floral fresh hops, lacto, and biscuity malt. Flavour is quite fresh, bursting with citrus and floral hops, lots of lacto, and a dry biscuity base. Very vibrant and fresh. Solid stuff.

On tap at Big Rock Urban, pours a clear copper golden with a small white head. Aroma brings out toasted malt, lager yeast and dry caramel. Flavour is along the same lines, with notes of honey, toasted malt, and a touch of caramel. Apparently this was supposed to be a honey brown lager - I definitely see that. Not too good.

Has pretty bold body for a helles, i think it's far from the style, but caramel malt dominate & make it a good overall beer

473ml can. Pours a clear medium amber-copper with a medium, creamy, long lasting, off-white head that leaves curtains of lace. Sweet, mild aroma of caramel malt, grain and light orange peel. Sweet flavour of caramel malt, bread, orange peel and a hint of grapefruit with a mildly bitter finish. Light body with a thin, watery texture and soft carbonation. Disappointing. Very under hopped and lacking bitterness. Much more like an amber ale, not terrible just boring.
