Purchased at a NSLC on my trip to Nova Scotia. Wow... what a beautiful smelling brew, with caramel, vanilla, hops, butterscotch, light cocoa and roasted nuts. Copper-amber colour with a huge beige head, very long lasting with thick lacing. The taste is not as crazy, but has decent hops creating some bitterness, with a mild dry finish. Soft and silky mouthfeel. Roasted malts linger in the aftertaste, burnt notes. This is really just 4.2% ABV ?! Quite nice for such a light beer.

Purchased at a NSLC on my trip to Nova Scotia. Pours a clear golden colour with a light amber hue. The head is big, close to white, staying up long and with good lacing. The aromas are spicy with some mild fruity yeast. The taste is where the rye shines, quite cereal-like notes with some grassy hops in there. Hints of citrus. A litte too much of this grain for my likings, but a good rye brew overall.

This English ale poured a deep Amber colour with a nice tan head. Scents of caramel, light cocoa and a little coffee. First swig was smooth and rich with good roasty malt flavour and lots of caramel. Finish is a little bitter with malty goodness lingering.

Bottle from Bishop’s Cellar, Halifax. It pours jet black with a thick tan head. The nose is rich roasted malt, big unanimously character, dark chocolate, salted liquorice, burnt treacle, light vanilla, rocky road and light smoke. The taste is bitter, rich roast, espresso coffee, mild acidity, charred wood, toasted spice, scorched earth, umami notes, light vanilla and liquorice with a lingering bitter/charred finish. Fulsome body and moderate carbonation. Quite rich and robust. It has rather good balance. A well made stout.

Keg at Stillwell Beer Garden. It pours hazy deep brown with a small beige head. The nose is soft, juicy, candied peel, stewed orange, earth, apricot, toffee and squash. The taste is smooth, toasty, bitter-sweet, butternut squash, stewed orange, peach, earthy, spicy, grassy bitterness and caramel with a dry finish. Medium body, moderate carbonation and foamy mouth-feel. Bizarre stuff, but somehow works. Interesting and fun.

Bottle from Bishop’s Cellar, Halifax. It pours clear deep amber with a decent off-white head. The nose is bitter-sweet, juicy, resinous, pine, stewed orange, peach, nectarine and brown bread. The taste is rather bitter, pine needles, oily, resinous, peppery spice, varnish, earth, brown bread, umami, grassy, grapefruit peel and some alcohol warmth with a lingering bitter - dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. A bit more malty than I usually like my double IPAs. Decent nonetheless.

Keg at Tom’s Havanna Cafe. It pours hazy red-amber with a small offshore head. The nose is soft, juicy, blood orange, jammy berry, fruit cake, toasty brown sugars and stewed orange. The taste is smooth, bitter-sweet, toasty, brown bread, malt loaf, jammy action, Victoria sponge cake, light peppery spice, sticky and pine with a dry finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Well-rounded and really rather drinkable. Decent stuff.

A hazed amber ale with a thick creamy off white head. In aroma, sweet caramel malt with grassy floral hops and honey crisp, smooth and fruity, if a bit oxidized. In mouth, a nice crisp biscuit malt with light grassy floral hops, grapefruit pulp, light tea notes, light oxidation but pleasant.

Brown bottle, 650 ml, trade with Réjean Doiron (merci!), savoured on April 19 2015; eye: brown with a caramel hue, hazy, beige head that turns into a tiny ring, average lacing nose: grapefruit, resinous hops, pine; mouth: grapefruit, resinous hops, pine, malt, average astringency, dry finale in grapefruit, medium-full body, good carbonation, rather bitter, slightly harsh texture; overall: nice surprise FRANÇAIS Bouteille brune, 650 ml, 8,5 %, échange avec Réjean Doiron (merci!), savourée le 19 avril 2015; œil : brune avec une teinte caramel, trouble, couverture de mousse beige qui se transforme en un petit anneau, dentelle moyenne; nez : pamplemousse, houblon résineux, pin; bouche : pamplemousse, houblon résineux, pin, malt, astringence moyenne, finale sèche en pamplemousse, corps moyen-corsé, bonne carbonatation, plutôt amère, texture très légèrement rugueuse; en résumé : belle surprise
