Hydra Beer Company is the ultimate combination of premium craft beers and modern culture, pushing the limit in both brewing and image.
We emerged on the South Dakota beer scene in May of 2015 with a heavy metal aesthetic and an excessive volume of creative energy. Our intense visual image has allowed us to push the limit in brewing creating our own unique genre of craft beer combined with modern culture. We continue to break new ground and deliver a unique metal influenced experience to our loyal brethren.
Friendly staff, which is a plus anywhere. Hydra has 24 taps, some of which are for meads, ciders, and cold brew coffee, plus, some gourmet sodas. Plus, the taproom is available for private rentals.
As for the story of Hydra Beer Company, it's fairly standard, with two buddies coming together over a mutual admiration for homebrewing and metal. Ok, maybe the second part isn't as standard as other buddy-style brewery openings. Plus, it's not the waterfall drinking, party metal of the 80s, but more the black shirt, street tough version of metal. In short, the vibe reminds us of Kuma's Corner in Avondale (Chicago).
We need to add a Hydra koozie to our collection. What's more, their mug club is the "Brew Horn club" ... SOLD! We want in!

Bomber from Kunda Beverage. Cloudy orange amber, with pine and pineapple aroma. Orange and grapefruit taste that finishes piney bitter. Unsubtle but not awful.

On tap at Hydra, pours black with a small brown head. Aroma brings out lots of charcoal, with cocoa and some earthy roast. Flavour is along the same lines, with earthy roast, cocoa, and sludgy coffee. This is really thick and sludgy. If I weren't so beer'd out, this might be more enjoyable.

On tap at Hydra, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out light lactose and moderate roast. Flavour is quite chocolate, with medium roast and a touch of lactose. Decently constructed, with medium roast and lactose in solid balance on the finish. Alright.

On tap at Hydra, pours a cloudy bright yellow with a small white head. Aroma brings out plenty of lacto, with some light tart citrus. Flavour is quite yogurty, with lots of tart citrus, tons of lacto, and gentle acidity. Competent enough, but nothing special.

Draft at Independent Ale House in Rapid City SD. Dark brown color purple tint. Aroma of dark roast coffee and plum. Taste is sour coffee balanced by sweetish plum. The combo works.

Bomber from Taylor’s Pantry in South Dakota. No sign of a date anywhere. Aroma is strong caramel, hint of sulfur. Pours hazy golden with a one finger bone white head that collapses into a big-bubbly ring fairly quick. The taste is quite bitter with lots of caramel malt flavor; not quite as bad as the aroma let on. I’m not sure if they intended it to taste this way, or if age has made the extreme caramel malt character come out. Wish they dated their bottles. There’s no sign of dankness, citrus or pine like the description says up there. It’s all caramel malt here. I bought this to be my first South Dakota tick. The awesome name and label description sold me on it. I guess I should have looked for a beer with a date before settling for this.

Draft/Fest. A- Citrus, sour. A- Yellow color, clear liquid, white head. T- Citrus, tart. P- Light body, average texture, average carbonation, slightly tart finish. O- Nice stuff. Definitely more sour than pale ale. No bitterness tasted and while it’s sour it’s not warhead extreme. Almost drinks like a tart lemonade.
