Description
Black Mesa Brewing Co. has an interesting story as an Oklahoma craft brewery in the golden age of craft brewing. 10 months after company inception our brewery location was destroyed by a tornado in the summer of 2013. Owners Chris Sanders and Brad Stumph found themselves in the position of gypsy brewers who quickly forged a great partnership with O’Fallon Brewery to continue producing their lineup of beers.

Bottle at Tapwerks. Pours a dark, mahogany color, with a medium, rocky, beige head. The aroma is molasses and brown sugar, cloves, dates, piney hops, pumpernickel, and walnuts. Sweet and yeasty, with a pleasant touch of bitterness. Medium to heavy body, with a sharp, lively palate. Great character and complexity. Nicely done quad, nailing the high points of the style, without the normal pitfalls of American attempts at Belgian styles.

Shaker pint draft at the Henry Hudson Public House in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The pour is a clear golden with a nice foamy white head. The aroma is malty grain, floral, with a bit of herbal. The taste is sweet yeasty, herbal floral with a bit of the malty grain under that. The palate is medium to light bodied with soft carbonation and the floral herbal finish. Tasty beer, not really my image of kolsch, but tasty.
