Description
After years of hobby brewing and an increasingly ardent interest in brewing as a profession — including countless brewery tours and immersion in local and online brewing interest groups — John Martin and fellow home brewer and co-founder Ken Broadhead launched Confluence Brewing in 2012. John left his construction management day-job to pursue Confluence and his passion for beer making full time.

The brewery is itself a confluence of John and Ken’s love for Iowa and craft beer. The result is a microbrewery that shares Iowa’s attributes of honesty, humility, hard work and a sense of humor. Confluence also has Iowa’s knack for being a delightful surprise to those who actually experience it.

Confluence cares about the creativity and craftsmanship that goes into making excellent beer, and knows that excellent beer can bring good friends together.

Growler shared by jcwattsrugger: Poured a golden to orange with white bubble head. Aroma was juicy citrus hops, very fruity nose. Nice balance of piney/citrus hops and malt backbone.

(From notes) Draft at The Iowa Taproom, 3-16-2016. Typical color. Aroma is char, old coffee beans, chocolate. Flavor follows with a touch of molasses. Weak roast. Texture is indeed dry.

Medium in body with a smooth mouthfeel. (on nitro). Overall nothing earth shattering but it is to style and crafted well.

(From notes) Draft at the brewery, 3-16-2016. Reviewing my notes I realized how great of a time we had at this brewery! Clear in color amber/ orange color. Aroma shows a good amount of rum with moderate citrus hops. Flavor shows citrus and pine hops balanced by a strong rum barrel treatment. Bitterness is low.

Medium in body with a slap of boozy rum in the finish. With this much rum influence I had to drink the sample slowly. Good balance but this is a sipper for sure.

(From notes) Draft at the brewery, 3-16-2016. Mostly clear red with no head. Aroma is mostly all bourbon. Can’t get much other than lingering bourbon. Flavor has raisins, figs and scotch malts underneath a large barrel character. The alcohol provides a mild warming after the swallow. Bourbon cuts any sweetness that was from the base beer.

If you like a heavy bourbon influence this will be highly enjoyable. This is bold and almost completely oak and whiskey / bourbon flavors.

(From notes) Draft at the brewery, 3-16-2016. Crystal clear gold color that looks like urine. Aroma is light lager yeast, grassy hops, grain. Flavor shows mild hop profile is mild, light grass, good amount of yeast. Backbone has a lot of caramel. I see what the brewer was going for (a hoppy lager) But the thinner body and weak hop profile doesn’t make this anything like you will find with Jacks Abby in Massachusetts.

Very drinkable without any problems. Just a little adjustments and this will be awesome.

(From notes) Draft The brewery, 3-16-2016. Aroma is mild pine, moderate citrus, grain. Flavor shows substantial hops profile: citrus intermingled with pine and grass. Decent grain backbone that is not too sweet. Body is medium with a lingering bitterness. Pretty balanced, nicely drinkable.
