Bottled. A pitch black beer with a thin brown head. The aroma has notes of sweet malt and roasted malt as well as lighter notes of alcohol and wood. The flavor is sweet with notes of sweet malt, roasted malt, and soy sauce as well as light notes of alcohol, leading to a dry and roasted finish.

Blind tasting at Papsø’s
Black color, small head. Clearly a barrel aged beer, there is a very nice oak vanilla aroma, with roasted and chocolate malt. Good body structure, not too thick, with just the necessary sweetness; good mix of roasted malt, chocolate malt and finally caramel; the mouthfeel is a bit oily; in the final the liquorice appears along with the roasted malt, and there is some light vanilla shade. Good bitterness, but a bit too much alcohol at the end. Very good, even if a bit confused.

From bottle, blind #10. Pours dark brown to black with a small tan head. Dense roasted, bourbon and chocolate malt aroma. Dry bourbon, chocolate and wooden vanilla note flavoured. Light acidic roasted malt touch. Lasting chocolate malt flavoured finish. Lasting bourbon touch. Medium to semi full bodied.

Winterfest 2009. This is a success. Alcohol in the aroma and flavor, but not too much for the style. Dark, fermenting fruit, plums, raisins. Lots of sweet malt and sugar.

I liked this a lot. It isn’t often an American brewpub pulls off a Belgian ale like this, that actually tastes like a traditional Belgian ale. Spices in the aroma and flavor, some coriander, citrus. A little earthy. Some alcohol, and sweet candy sugar. Good palate.

My second beer of the night at Winterfest 2009. This was a bit underwhelming, following the Framboise, but I liked it anyway. Light red color. Aroma has a little yeast and candi sugar. Flavor is just a little sweet, cranberry essence, but not a ton of cranberry flavor. Very low carbonation.

Framboise was my first beer of the night at Winterfest 2009, so my palate was fresh. Immediate aroma of yeast and oak, with an earthy element. Light pink color. Flavor is moderately sour, think of Boon sourness level, we are not talking Cantillon or Drie Fontienen here. There is oak in the flavor, but it is dry. Real, and very mellow raspberry flavor. Low carbonation.

ABR 2008. Well, its an Irish stout, true to style, but I suppose this could almost qualify as a mild, given the low abv. Some oatmeal. Dry grain. A drinkable enough session beer. There is only so much that can be done with a style like this.

ABR 2008. I thought this was really good, even if it was overshadowed by the 2008 Cherry Batch. Aroma has malt and some fruit. Flavor is lightly sweet malt with real cherry flavor, just a little sour. Some grain. It reminds me of Bells Cherry Stout, which i also enjoy.
