Winterfest, 2013. Something went wrong here. I am used to the Herkimer bringing outstanding beers to Winterfest, like their smoked doppelbock, or the triple bock. This year, they put out no effort at all. This thin and watery Baltic porter has some flavor of roasted grain but that is it. Light, no complexity, and hardly any flavor at all. Baltic Porter is a style I look for but this is a bad attempt, and I know these guys can do better.

Very much like a saison, which I assume is due to the yeast. For a German style, it is interesting to choose the Belgian yeast and I am curious why they did that. Very low carbonation. Dark yellow and opaque. Belgian yeast aroma. Flavor is sweet with light spice, including coriander and some citrus. I suggest cutting down on the sugar or whatever they are doing to make it so sweet.

Winterfest 2012, as "Imperial Alt." Black and very low carbonation. Dry malt in the aroma, but any complexity that might be there is entirely overwhelmed by too much alcohol. The same is true of the flavor, a boozy beer, though I can pick up some dry malt. It would taste better with a lower abv.

From the tap at Winterfest, 2012. Aroma of port and sweet white wine. A sweet, rich beer. Thick palate. Malt, sugar, and some pear, almost like a liqueur. One of the highlights of Winterfest this year.

On tap at the brewpub. Herkimer is generally solid but this beer is a failure. Very light all around. Next to no aroma, and very lightly sweet flavor. Even for a wheat beer, flavors and aroma are mild. Light gold color.

Tap at the Herkimer. Expensive, at $6.50 for a shaker, or 2 for 1 during halftime. Light brown color. I do not get any hop spiciness, but mild malt flavor with dry grain. I don’t know how high the abv is, but no perceivable alcohol in the flavor or on the palate.
