Trappistenbrouwerij de Kievit
Microbrewery
in Zundert,
Noord-Brabant,
Netherlands 🇳🇱
Associated Venue: Trappistenbrouwerij De Kievit
Established in 2013
In 2009, careful consideration led to the decision to start a small brewery. A small brewery, because: ‘monks brew to live and do not live to brew’. Building work began in 2012. Following extensive preparations, the plans were implemented between October 2012 and October 2013. The brewery was built within the existing contours of the former buildings of the De Kievit farm. These buildings also house the workplaces. ‘Zundert Trappist’ beer was introduced on the market in December 2013.

Bottle @ Monk's Pub, Chicago (Aug 2023). Pours murky amber-orange with very small frothy off-white head, spicy malt aroma, high carbonation, medium bitter caramel malt taste with dried fruits flavor, alcohol undertones, thin smooth body, long finish. Properly incisive, it has a bite at the end.

Pours a (mostly) clear deep golden colour and a rocky white head that leaves a small layer retention. Aroma's of herbs/spices and a little sulphur. Retronasal it's herbal/spicy and light sweet. Flavour is light sweet, light spices, a hint of sour. Light bodied but certainly not thin, probably due to the rye. Finishes moderate bitter. Quite pleasant.

Bottle, directly from the abbey. Color: Clear golden, dense white head. Aroma: Spicy. Taste: Malty witha nice hopbitter backbone. Spicy notes from the used rye malt and, as we recently learned with the introduction of Zundert 10 anniversary edition the brewers of Zundert use local gale in all of their beers. Yeasty hints. Medium body, average carbonation. Moderate sweet and moderate to over moderate (herbal) bitterness. Dry, bittery finish. Very nice low alcohol Trappist.
