Description
Abdij Maria Toevlucht (Our Lady of Refuge Abbey) belongs to the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance, better known as the Trappists. The abbey was founded on 14 September 1938 when the priory of Zundert was elevated to the status of an abbey.

In 2009, careful consideration led to the decision to start a small brewery. A small brewery, because: ‘monks brew to live and do not live to brew’. Building work began in 2012. Following extensive preparations, the plans were implemented between October 2012 and October 2013. The brewery was built within the existing contours of the former buildings of the De Kievit farm. These buildings also house the workplaces. ‘Zundert Trappist’ beer was introduced on the market in December 2013.

Bottle 33 cl. Pours a clear, deep brown with an orange hue end a creamy, beige head. Nose has sweet molasses and overripe dark fruits, dates in particular. Rich, sweet body, dark overripe fruits, brown sugars and distinct, Belgian yeast. Warming alcohol finish. Lovely if not quite as complex as the best Monastic Quadrupels. 070223

Bottled (from Systembolaget Avion, Umeå). Deep ambery brown colour with a mediumsized off-white head. Aroma is spicy, some sweet malts, dried fruits and mild herbal tones. Flavour is sweet malts, dried fruits, mild spicy/yeasty elements with some toasted and nutty tones. Elements are there, but the beer is a bit on the thin side for being a quad.

33 cal bottle from Super Food in Aruba. Amber orange pour is topped by a dense, mouse-like beige head. Rich, toasted malt aroma hints at honey and dark dried fruits. First sip is semisweet and sherry-like. Earthy malt plays off the estery, yeasty character. Nicely complex without being overly intense. Quite enjoyable.

The aromas are Belgiany spice, malt and yeast. Flavors are similar to nose, add in some toffee with great balance between bitter, sweet and carbonation. Very good body and finish follows flavors. Classified as a tripel but doesn't seem that way. Good beer. My first from this Trappist Brewery.
