Description

Bottled. A deep red beer with a thin tan head. The aroma has notes of caramel, malt, and bread. The flavor is sweet with notes fo malt, caramel, and bread, leading to a dry finish, where the caramel note lingers. Thanks yespr for sharing.

The neck of the bottle broke when I opened it and it turned into one of the worst gushers I have experienced so far - loads and loads of amber foam. The bit I could try safely was nice enough: A bit of roast, coffee and chocolate can be detected. dry mouthfeel.

Bottle 274 of 600 from Maruhn, Darmstadt
Bottled 2010, 1 year old
Eine kreation von: F. Thiele

Dark amber to chestnut color, hazy; quite flat and oily, hence not much head, just a thin and non persistent layer, quickly gone.
The aroma is mild but immediately reveals the vanilla from the oak aging; the aroma is also nutty, and with traces of tobacco; American style, but not excessive; quite seducing.
Good body structure, without being thick; round mouthfeel, but also a bit oily later; the flavor of malt and caramel is good, the vanilla from the oak too; but the combination of high bitterness and high alcohol, mainly in the end, is too oppressive, and the final suffers a bit from that; it’s also quite sweet, but the sweetness is cut by the sharp alcohol. Like many beers from BraufuctuM, there is some sludge in the end.
Good but boozy.

Muddy light amber color; generous head, compact. Very nice hoppy aroma; at first it’s fruity (sweet yellow fruits, apricots, mango; classic Cascade), then it’s a bit grassy and minty, and finally a bit cheesy. The spicy flavor is evident, a mix of Weizen and Saison, quite rough and yeasty; the hop brings some apricot jam fruitiness (sweeter feeling than many others, having bitter oranges), some cedar as well; in the final the yeast is too strong; correct bitterness.
Pleasant but unclean.

Black color; huge brownish head. Elegant aroma of roasted malt, roasted nuts, biscuity. Good mouthfeel, balanced; strong flavor of dark chocolate, roasted malts, light leather; correct bitterness, while the final gets just drier, because of the roastiness.
Clean and very good.

Mahogany color, hazy, with a generous head. Aroma of caramel, and strong aroma of candy sugar, light aroma of cakes. Correct body; quite good caramel flavor, with some chocolate and a very light biscuity trace; correct bitterness, leading to a rather dry finish. Average.

Cloudy amber color; giant head; there is a thin collar of yeast around the bottle neck. Mild aroma of malt and very light smoke, some yeast too. Smooth mouthfeel, creamy flavor; there is some roasted malt and moderate presence of smoked malt; but the body is a bit too un-bold, the beer un-daring, and the mouthfeel too dry for my taste. Quite good nevertheless.

Bottle from Galeria Kaufhof, Köln
Hazy amber color, with a medium-sized creamy head. The aroma is fresh and hoppy; at first there is some Hallertau, then more of the Citra, but the blend is interesting, not so lemony as a pure Citra hopping, more creamy; later, it’s even biscuity (must come from the malts). Good body strength, with a smooth mouthfeel; some dry toffee is the dominant flavor, different from American IPA’s, and it’s appreciated for being dry, basically; the hopping is quite strong, with nice fruity presence (bitter oranges). Notice the usage of Pilsner Malt, Wiener Malt, Caramelmalt. The final is bitter, well constructed yet bone dry, with a very light astringency.
A very interesting new version of IPA, cultural crossover.
