About
Founded in 2015, Lupum - or “wolf” in Latin - is the first and only farmhouse brewery in Portugal. Born as an experiment in the cellars of Antonio Lopes' family farm, the moniker was inspired by the founder's family name, meaning “son of wolf.” A laboratory technician turned mad scientist, António began with a singular goal - to brew what he loved, and to brew it well.

Nestled within the hills of the Douro River in the quiet parish of Avintes, just minutes inland from the infamous wine cellars of Porto, Lupum continues to stay true to its wild DNA: strong beers with a daring twist for the adventurous of heart, a work of love with total irreverence for the mandates of convention. Audentes fortuna iuvat - fortune favors the bold - and discovery belongs to those who seek it.

Review based on the BJCP2015 guidelines (style 30A/20C). Bottle 33 cl - Batch 1 (BBF 12/2027). AROMA: medium-high hot alcohol aroma, followed by medium cocoa aroma and medium-low coffee. APPEARANCE: very dark brown to black and opaque. thin brown head with no retention. TASTE: similar to the aroma with medium-high cocoa, faint plums and coffee. medium-high hot alcohol. medium bitterness with a dry and slightly roasted finish. PALATE: full body with a velvety texture. very low carbonation. hot alcohol sensation. OVERALL: an imperial stout a bit mono-dimensional with aggressive alcohol (even after 1 year on the bottle) and almost no carbonation.

Re-rating (previous 2.4) Review based on the BJCP2015 guidelines (style 26D). Bottle 33 cl - Batch 5 (BBF 1/2029). AROMA: medium solventy and slightly spicy alcohol with a sweet malt background with an underatenuated and sirupy (caramel) character. slight polyphenols from cereal husk and sulphury compounds (sewer). APPEARANCE: ambar color and very slightly hazy. medium-low ivory head with low retention. leg formation. TASTE: initial medium-high sweetness with an underatenuated and sirupy character. slight phenolics (clove) and low yeasty flavor. low bitterness with a sweet finish. a bit unbalanced. PALATE: medium-high to high body with low carbonation. alcoholic warmth. OVERALL: again, a beer too sweet rendering it a bit unbalanced with some odd fermentation by-products.

Review based on the BJCP2015 guidelines (style 20C). Bottle 33 cl - Batch nr 2 (BBF 10/2018). AROMA: medium-low sour-like aroma, mixed with medium alcohol notes (almost solvent) and low roasted malt background. APPEARANCE: balck color and opaque. cereal hull in suspension at the top. medium brown head with no retention. TASTE: medium roasted/burnt cereal flavor with mild sour character and an odd old wood-like note. medium-high bitterness with a dry and roasted finish. PALATE: medium-high to high body with very low carbonation. almost absent alcohol warmth. OVERALL: an imperial stout with recipe and execution problems, and an odd wood-like flavor (altough the label does not say it is barrel aged).

Tap. Tasted on the 21/10/2017 at II In Peccatum Beer Fest. Dark brown colour with a medium and foamy tan head. Aroma of strong alcohol, wood, liquorice, roasted malts and coffee. Taste is strong liquor, caramel and malts. Aftertaste is too sweet caramel. Strong finish and aftertaste. Next one please!
