About
An independent, family owned brewery specializing in American inspired ales using unique ingredients and new hop varieties. The Austins are California natives that found Alpena, Michigan on a road trip and would use summer vacations to visit the area for over a decade because of the natural beauty and small town charm. Brant Austin, co-owner and brewer, graduated from the Siebel Institute and lived abroad in Germany for Brew Master School. Brant brewed for Ballast Point of San Diego and Mother Earth Brew Co. of Vista CA. In 2014 Brant and his wife, his brother Blake and his family, and parents Dana and Julie all packed up and moved out to Alpena, Michigan to with the dream of creating a production brewery and tasting room offering unique beers and scratch made food. Established in 2015 Austin Brothers can be visited for unique and experimental batches and some tasty food. You can also find Austin Brothers' Beer throughout the state of Michigan in select locations on draft and in package.

Quite hazy golden and very light orange coloured body with a lot of floaters here that rise up from the bubbles and leave a thinnish, barely half centimetre tall pure white head above the 90 per cent opaque body. Aroma of guava, lactose, oranges, strawberries, a bit of mangoes, a bunch of papaya, melons and associated richness, some vanilla, but no passionsfruit. Medium-bodied; Relatively nice dry orange and mango flavours show with some very pungent, bitter and astringent hop bitterness from alpha acids with hardly and malt notes (no oat or wheat notes here at all) and no real sweetness. Aftertaste shows more of the upfront tropically fruity notes with a lot of bitterness here, a ton of dryness, some pungency and astringency, but quite thin without muhc depth and no body from the malts - pretty straight-forward. Overall, decent, but I was expecting more, especially on a balance and maltiness perspective along with a range of some sweetness, since this is thin, dry and one-dimensional. Not bad to have given that I was in Hawai`i with REAL POG juice three days ago and am returning home to Michigan in four days to get more Michigan beers, but this wasn't great for either place. I sampled this sixteen ounce, pint-sized can, purchased from Beer Baron in Livonia, Michigan on 23-October-2022 for US$4,49, packaged on 20-October-2021 and sampled at my house here in Washington on 14-April-2023.

Can thanks to my mom! Pours a clear gold with a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of pine with a bit of grapefruit, some resin and a touch of bread backing. Flavor has earthy pine and resin with some grapefruit and a light bread backbone.

Can from Livonia Liquor. Pours a clear orange with a finger of white foam that dissipates. Pine, pear and grapefruit on the nose. Watery on the palate with lingering pine and pith notes. Dry finish with a watery mouthfeel.

Ridiculously hazy (obviously) straw coloured body with a lot of bubbles somehow still noticeable rising from the bottom, with a pretty thick, three centimetre tall off-white head that fades quickly and leaves a soapy lace on the sides. Aroma of oranges, grass, hay, light flowers and dryness with a touch of fruit candy in the mix too, with wheat and sugars obvious, too. Medium-bodied; Odd, really wierd soured, puckering flavours of lemon rind, and oranges slices noticeable at first that tastes like something is definitely off here, but then some wheat at light oaty malt notes come through as well as some fruit candy sweetness with little else and no bitterness or traditional hop flavours. Aftertaste shows that tart and really sour fruit and funky yeast profile without any real hints of an IPA here at all - this is a 'sour ale', period, despite what any label says. Overall, I think I prefer this as the beer intended, I just don't like assuming that I'm drinking an IPA before I open the can (or for me, before I left the store and the state!) - this is very fruity, very soured and NOT hoppy at all! Great to sample tough and recommended - as a SOUR - NOT an IPA, and I'm rating it as such! I sampled this sixteen ounce, pint-sized can, purchased from Siciliano's in Grand Rapids, Michigan on 02-August-2021 for US$4,09, packaged on 16-November-2020 and sampled at my house here in Washington on 28-May-2022.

Thanks Gregg for sharing the can! Taster showing turbid pale gold with sparse white foam.

The nose shows moderately intense notes of guava and mango.

The palate is well carbonated and medium bodied. Light guava with adzuki malt and a mild bitterness.

16 oz can. Bright fruity, herbal aroma, almost minty. Flavor is smooth orange and grapefruit citrus, with a touch of tropical fruit and herbal hops. Well-made.

Deep dark brown, almost pitch black coloured body with a thick, four to five centimetre tall tan and rich light brown head that stays on top for a long time. Aroma of rich anise, licorice, earth, roasted oatmeal and significant coffee notes with a lot of alcohol and pungent bitterness, in the nose, at least. Full-bodied; Very rich earthy and nutty notes show at first, but the large oatmeal malt quality shows right behind with a big pungent grainy flavour towards the end and a deep anise and very licoricey bite along with a bunch of bitter coffee noticeable throughout. Aftertaste is full flavoured, showing a good deal of cream and lactose, but even more roasted oatmeal and bitterness and even more (than that) coffee and alcohol pungency. Overall, a nice Imperial Stout with a wide range of bitter and pungent notes, but the anise, coffee and chocolate are strongest here. This would do better with some significant aging, but I had it fresh on draught and i'm still happy that I did! I sampled this twelve ounce pour on draught at The Grand Trunk Pub in Downtown Detroit, Michigan with two of my kids on 22-October-2022 for US$8,00.
