I didn’t realise lagers could be this good, although calling it a lager is under selling it. The aroma includes dates, aniseed, grapefruit and toffee. There’s enough malt to make it chewable as well as a good dose of hops to stop it from being too cloying

(Bottle) Black with toffee colored small head. Nice rich complex aroma - caramel, wood, port. Full bodied, sticky, creamy with velvety carbonation. The taste is exceptional, so rich and complex. Clearly this is a very strong beer; there’s plenty of alcohol but well integrated with rich flavours. It’s sweet - dark roast malt, port, raisins, dark chocolate. There’s a lot more going on - the cognac is distinct and there’s a pleasant dark burnt toffee bitterness in the finish. An extraordinary beer - it has many of the characteristics of drinking a fortified wine, with the balance of alcohol and rich fruity sweetness; however there’s much more than that as it has pleasant carbonation and a more complex and extensive range of flavours. Very impressive.

From a 330ml bottle on 9/9/2014. Pours the darkest of brown with a big light tan head. The nose is nice and chocolatey, with a touch of smoke and coffee. The flavour brings more sweet chocolate, a touch more coffee, and a reasonably stern, spicy bitterness. The palate is very creamy and the carbonation quite lively. An unusual porter and a pretty good one at that. So pleased to have an adventurous brewer like Moon Dog in Oz.

Bottle, 13C. Black with a tan cap that never quite disappears. Aroma of molasses, tar, toasted seaweed, dark berries. Lowish carbonation, oily. Sweet with dark berries, chocolate and molasses, but roasted, bitter and oaky flavours come in early to balance but not mask the malt. Peaty/ iodine-like things are there but don’t dominate. Expected the "aged in fresh American oak barrels" to be too much too, but it’s all quite mellow and nicely integrated. For me, the most convincing Moon Dog beer so far.

Bottle bought in Brisbane in August 2014. Black with a small head. This was a strange one. Sour with some light berries, brett, gingerbread and some chlorine. The body was light. I did not finish my glass.

Pours black with a dark tan head.Nose shows smoked malt with a meaty character, heavy roast, cocoa, chocolate liqueur and ash.Bittersweet flavours, more heavy smoked malt, chocolate, aggressive roast and a little booze. Nice sweet malt backing.Great creamy-feeling carbonation.

From a 330ml bottle on 21/8/2014. Pours a slightly cloudy golden with a smallish white head, with lots of yeast floaties. Has a light aroma featuring apricot and a touch of tropical fruit. The flavour is very intense, with the apricot hugely evident, along with a touch of booze and a big, quite sharp, slightly salty, citrussy bitterness at the back. Has a syrupy texture and average carbonation. Improves markedly as it warms. Very unusual and rather enjoyable, if not an absolute bullseye. Props to Moon Dog for producing some weird gear which pushes the envelope but remains very drinkable.

Bottle bought at Brothers Brewery, Auckland, August 2014. Black with a small tan head. Aroma and taste of licorice, smoke, roasted malt and some salt. The finish was bitter with some notes of rum. An interesting and tasty one.

Bottle. Darkish brown with a small crema head. Looks like coffee. Intriguing, almost magic tricky aroma - first sweet coffee and moderate roasted barley and then suddenly it’s almost borscht-like (!) Then dill-like herbal notes turn to chicory and remind you of the coffee smelled in the first place. Quite something. Rather thin, medium to low carbonation. Lots of chicory - which for me is a poor substitute for rather than complements coffee - earthy, spicy, toasty bread. Very interesting but didn’t love it.
