Description
At Moon Dog we love crafting bloody delicious beers that are fun and a little bit different. We've been doing it since 2010 at our rad brewery in the backstreets of inner Melbourne’s Abbotsford. Over the years we’ve grown a heap, adding our tropical brewery bar paradise, the ballroom oasis function space, and a freakin' big fancy production brewery to keep more delicious beers flowing. We’re a proudly independent, Australian owned craft brewery, still run by the same guys that started it all those years ago.

Bottle. Deep brown, some chunks, a beige head settles to a coat. Not the prettiest. Aroma of chocolate, prunes, mace, treacle. Full-bodied, smooth, carbonation could be a tad higher. Sweet with singed sugars, prunes, brandy. Very rich, but the sweetness doesn’t hang around - spices (cloves, mace) pumpkin seeds and citrus rind lift things away and bitterness creeps up. An attempt at a Pannepotish beer? Good stuff, may improve.

Bottle, 9C. Very cloudy mid brown with a small off-white head that never quite disappears. Still looks a bit dodgy though. Aroma of caramel, grapes, grapefruit, cinnamon, cloves. Don’t get much pumpkin. Just slightly syrupy with lowish carbonation. Pumpkin is there in the taste and combines nicely with the caramel flavours. Bitterness is gentle but kicks in well before the sweetness has much of a chance to outstay its welcome. Spices come out in the finish along with some pine. Not a knockout, but harmonious.

Bottle, 8C. Amber with a modest white head that lasts OK. Aroma of lychees, melon, grapes, caramel. Syrupy with low carbonation. Sweet with fudge, grapes, light tropical notes. Bitterness struggles to emerge, tropical and spice notes seem a bit medicinal. Not my sort of thing.

Pours deep amber with a fading head.Nose shows big fruity hops, lots of pear, peach and floral notes. Also some sweet caramel and crystal malt.A fair bit of malt in the flavours too, along with lots of fruity and piny hops and an aggressive finish of alcohol and bitterness.Could use more carbonation. Body feels overly thick.A bit too boozy.

Pours brown with a small head.Nose shows sweet pumpkin and some cinnamon or nutmeg and cloves. Big underlying sweet notes. The spices are much more prominent as flavours, lots of cinnamon. More sweet malt followed by a plain bitterness in the finish. Pretty good stuff.Needs more carbonation though.

Pours ridiculously frothy, almost all head at first. Had to wait 15 minutes just to pour it.Nose shows peat, funk, spicy notes and faint fruit.Flavours include peat, sweet malt, light fruit, spicy phenolic notes and some solvent-like booze.Loads too much carbonation.

Pours amber with a small, lasting head.Nose shows over-ripe apricot, some caramel and resinous hops. The apricot character is pretty tempting!Flavours still focus on apricot, but seem somewhat musty, like dried apricots. Lots of caramel, but also a smoked malt character, pretty interesting!Body seems a bit too syrupy and thick.

(Bottle) Pours hazy golden brown with persistent loosing off-white head. Aroma is primarily peat with smoke, pine, toffee, barnyard and hint of funkiness. The aroma seems to mellow a while after being poured. Palate is annoyingly overly fizzy. The flavour is outstanding, almost shocking. It is dominated by a lovely rich peatiness. There are smokey notes and hints of caramel and a little bitterness in the finish. Overall an unusual and interesting beer. To be honest I am not sure I actually like it, but I am very impressed by it! I do like the peaty whiskies, so am not put off by the peatiness per se. However the combination of this flavour on a rich and frothily fizzy base is just too odd for me.

(Bottle) Clear mid brown with good beie head. The aroma is very unusual, and somewhat challenging. The dominant aroma is rather funky and I assume comes from the "farmhouse yeast" as it Edmonds me of a wild yeast fermented Belgian lambic. There additionally some apple and maybe smokey hints, the latter are presumably from the peat. Full body and medium carbonation with nice smooth almost creamy mouthfeel. The taste is as unusual and challenging as the aroma. It is dominated by by a collection of interesting flavours which are not immediately appealing, but could possibly become acquired tastes. I detect leather, peat, tobacco, maybe gunpowder. This is then overplayed on some pleasant rich sweetness of a molasses or burnt toffee nature and a hint of apples. Overall a fascinating and unusual beer but would take some effort to acquire a taste for it. Very pleased I have tried it, but it won’t be a regular.

Pours black with an almost non-existent head.Nose shows tart plums, soft funk, musty oak, brown sugar, cherries and a bold wild yeast sour character.Flavours include more oak, lacto acidity, roasted malt. The roasted malt jars a little with the plum and acidity. Carbonation is a little over the top.
