About
The Ægir Brewery was established by Aud Melås and Evan Lewis. The brewery was named after the god of the seas, Ægir, from the Norse Mythology. He was according to Odin the best brewer in the world.
Ægir Brewery was one of the first craft beer breweries in Norway – and definitely has the most distinctive brewpub. Inspired by Ægir´s mythological hall under the sea, the brewpub is built to give the feel of a Viking style longhouse. You have to go at least a thousand years back in time to find an atmosphere like this; open fire, dragon carvings and a stave church roof that wasn´t built in a day.
Since the start Ægir Brewery has continued to grow and in 2012 expanded with a brand-new production facility that today boasts a capacity of a million litres per year.
The export marked became very important for the brewery and made up an increasingly large part of the yearly volume. At some point Ægir Brewery was exporting to twelve different countries.

The canned beer production was moved from Flåm early in June 2023 to Amundsen Bryggeri in Oslo. Only draught beers served at Flåmsbrygga will be produced locally in Flåm. The brewpub and hotel, Flåmsbrygga, was sold early in 2025. In 2025, over 40 percent less Ægir beer was sold in grocery stores than the year before. From June 2026 Amundsen takes over the Ægir brand and all beer production.

Three 500ml bottles (bb. 30.11.08) bought at Fenaknoken in Oslo. Pours an orange coloured body with a slight haze. White head reduced to a filmy layer. Fresh grassy smell with a mild touch of herbs. Soft, succulent orange hoppiness in flavour. Rounded bitterness to the finish. Clean, exuberant and refreshing palate. Thirst-quenching (04.04, 06.04 and 12.04.2008).

Bottle. It pours a rather muddy, dark brown, thin body with a small, beige head. Pleasant roasted nose with chocolate, cocoa and coffee and a weak note of dried fruits. Some earthy, yeast notes too, becoming more evident as it warms, but disappearing after a while. Sumbel is a bit thin on the palate, but at 4.7% ABV, that’s really excuseable. There’s flavors of coffee, sweetness, bitterness and chocolate like in a dark chocolate cake, and a hint of bonfire-like sourness, probably due to the dark malts. Quite dry in the mouth, with a pleasant co2 level. The finish is long and roasted, and there’s also a little flavor of chocolate. Bitterness from both hops and dark malt it seems. The hops is subdued in this beer, but as it warms up they are more pronounced giving it a nice addition to the aroma and flavor. Definately a beer that shouldn’t be served straight from the fridge, it needs some temperature to open up. (080415)

Big white head of unevenly sized bubbles does not last. Leaves lacing on the glass. Orange body with light citric fruity aroma. Light, delicate citric grainy taste with fruity lime hop notes. Mealy. Light maltiness and some grass. Traces of peppery hops in the aftertaste. Slightly watery. Important not to drink it too cold, as the flavour is almost entirely lost then. Nice, drinkable. Probably a great summer beer. (0.5l bottle from Fenaknoken.)

Two 500ml bottles from Fenaknoken, Oslo. Airy, white head over a foggy, light orange coloured body. Rounded grass-fruity aroma. Refreshing in flavour with sappy orange hops, a touch of spicies and a lactescent note. Smooth, dry bitter ending. Natural carbonated. Rather foamy mouthfeel. Bøyla is very similar to Påskesol, but this one has got a lighter body colour and a more hoppy flavour. Very moreish (04.04 and 12.04.2008).

500 ml bottle, thanks to Beer_2000. Bottle conditioned. ABV is 4.7%. Amber to brown colour, large head with an orangey hue. Nice aroma of Christmas spices, toffee and some malts. The flavour also has Christmas spices and a moderate sweetness, but the mouthfeel is still very thin - too thin for a Christmas/Yule brew. Very moderate hops in the slightly metallic aftertaste, but this beer definitely needs more hops. Actually it needs more malts and more alcohol too!

Medium white head. Amber hazy body. Syrupy sweetish grainy malty taste with minty notes. Aftertaste is much the same. Very nice. (0.5l bottle thanks to yngwie. I should rerate this.)

Bottle. Thx Beer_2000. Actually, he provided me with both my samples of this. First time it was a night with several beers, and it sure didn’t stand out. It looked nice, with a medium sized beige head over a slightly hazy, orange body. The aroma was rather weak and quite boring, with caramel sweetness and grains doing most of the work. The flavor followed the same path, with sweetness, caramel, grainy notes and a wee hint of cooked vegetables. Rather thin in the mouth, especially considering it being a Christmas beer, and the finish was sweet and grainy. It wasn’t a bad beer, maybe I would have rated it higher if it wasn’t a Christmas beer, but for that purpose, it’s just not there. Rating: 5-4-5-3-10-2.7. (071228)

The second time I had it I shared a bottled with Beer_2000, without having a lot of other beers at the same night. It lead to a much higher rating, and it deserved that re-rate. It was still a orange-golden body, this time clear, as we left the last cl of the beer in the bottle, and it had a medium-sized, off-white head. Cloves, some cardamom, roasted malt and some caramel made the aroma, and the grainyness from the first bottle wasn’t noticed. Rather sweet flavor with a very evident clove flavor, some cardamom and caramel. Low of hops and bitterness, but that was just fine. Medium body, slightly sticky, and a roasted and bitter finish. It sure left a much better impression than the first time. Still it is an easy drinkable , sessionable beer. And I’m looking forward to the day we see the birth of it’s bigger brother. (080107)

500 ml bottle. Reddish orange body with a dense, medium off-white head. Aroma is vague malty with a spicy touch (clove?). Flavor is rather sweet, light roasted malt and a bit sour bitterness, this may be caused by the cloves, or whatsoever the spices might be. Body is a bit thin, and gives this beer a thin flavor where this spicy bitterness becomes out of balance. This beer is not in harmony, but have some interesting flavors. I’m sure a few more experiences and maybe some more alcohol could do the trick.

Bottle. Clear, deep golden pour, with an off-white head. Lovey piney and resiny nose, with a good maltyness and citrus too. Malt, beef-stock, resin, citrus and some sweetness, but more on the bitter side than on the sweet side. Full body and a long, resiny finish with some camphor. Really lovely. Rating: 7-4-7-4-15-3.7. 070909

Bottle. It pours a hazy, orange-golden body under a nice beige head. Malty-sweet, slightly beef-stock like nose with grapefruit, pine cones and resin from the hops. Malty-sweet, beefstocky flavor too, with the same piney, resiny and citrusy hops. Fine, lingering bitterness. Full body. A really pleasant and easy to drink IPA. Rating: 7-4-7-4-15-3.7. 081128
Bottle. It pours a clear, dark orange-golden body topped by a big beige head leaving nice lacings. A good layer of sediments are easily stirred from the bottom of the bottle, so a gentle pour is called for. Citrusy, pine-cone like nose with a solid caramel malty base. A bit sweet on the palate maybe, but with enough bitterness to deal with it. Almost meaty, with pinecones and the white part of orange peel. Delicious bitterness and prickling feeling on the tongue in the end. Full-bodied and well carbonated. Really good to finally have it available at Vinmonopolet. 100329
