Tap at the brewery. Nice ginger nose, rich malt, citrus. Hazy orange with a tall, thick head. Sweet citrus and ginger flavor, rich malt. Prickly, tingly finish is especially nice. The ginger is not overdone, nor is the sweetness. Good.

Tap at the brewery. Hazy bright golden orange with a low head. Big lemony hop nose, orange, grains. Flavor seems to revel some dms, although that could be the barley they used, which is kind of special. Nice lemony, leafy hops, honey. Full body.

Tap at Zest Oike. Great hop nose, fruity, tropical, citrus (Simcoe and Mosaic). Sweet and young flavor, great hops. A bit too green (admitted by the brewer), with a bit of astringency in the finish, but pretty good and very nice hops. Want to try it in a couple more weeks.

Tap at Zest Fest. Nishijin Silky Weizen 5% 10 IBU Opaque gold with a thick head of foam and a nice sweet clove aroma. Medium bodied with lots of banana and wheat flavor. Soft silky mouthfeel on a medium body. Surprisingly good. 3.5

Tap at the Zest Oike Festival. Lemony nose, crackery malt, slightly medicinal note as well. Flavor is light, crackery, wheat, lemony hops. Crisp and light, the malt works, but again there is something medicinal happening that detracts a lot.

Bottle from Yamaoka. Nishijin Bakushu Yuzu-Muge IPA 6% A clear orange-copper color with very little head. Apparently, this is a new brewery in the North Kyoto area near Yamaoka that has a social-welfare component to give jobs and raise money for autism. The nose is huge Yuzu zest, some biscuit and butterscotch diacetyl. Medium to full bodied with a bitter butterscotch and Yuzu flavor. It’s an ok first effort and I applaud the cause but the beer needs more work. I think these guys may have a taproom in which case I’ll try to check it out this year... ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from the brewery, 2026. bronze-orange color, slight hazy, low to medium head. Light yuzu in the nose, not huge, some bready malt and citrus. Nose is slightly faint. Bready malt with light caramel, yuzu, medium sweetness, nice bitter finish. The flavor is quite complex and well balanced. The malt character is excellent, and the finish is crisp and long. Much improved from that first batch!

Tap at Komachi, Oct. 2017. Yuzu nose, creamy, biscuity malt. Slightly lactic. Tons of yuzu in the flavor, a bit of biscuity sweetness bit of astringency from the fruit. Bitter, spicy finish. Not too bad for a start. Deep orange-amber color. (6.3)
