A friend gave me this to try from a new brewery in Akita: Ugo Bakushu PA001 Pale Ale 4.5% I gotta say on first impression it’s a good looking beer with an ora de brown color and a thick head of beige foam with staying power. The aroma is caramel and butterscotch sweetness, kind of diacetyl like plus not much noticeable hoppiness. Light bodied and dry with some earthy herbal bitterness but also a rough caramel butterscotch diacetyl. Not a bad start but they’ve got a ways to go. They also need to decide do they want to do an English Pale Ale (maltier) or an American Pale Ale (hoppier). ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Creamy, biscuit wheat nose, orange, peach, light spice. Light papaya and pineapple too. Cloudy deep gold. Thick heavy malts, seems almost under-attenuated, estery, doughy, bit worty. Orange, tropical fruits. Not horrible but not a wit and not sure what is going on here. Malty like a maibock.

Bottle. Pours a clear, bright, deep gold with a medium head. Nose is diacetyl, lemon, orange, biscuity malts, toffee. Flavor is sweet and buttery, toffee, citrus, minerals, slightly rough finish. Not foul, but they still have a way to go.

Bottle from Furusato nozei. Diacetyo, caramel / butterscotch. Some orange and other citrus. Deep amber orange, tall, fine head. Light, minerally, toffee, citrus. Too much diacetyl but still drinkable. Rather bitter finish. Not a horrible start, but they need a lot of work.
