Twin Sails Brewing joined Port Moody’s “Brewers Row” late in 2015, opening right next door to Yellow Dog. The name of the brewery refers to its founders, identical twin brothers, as well as the common sight of sailboats that can be seen on the waters of the Burrard Inlet right out front of the brewery. Twin Sails focuses on progressive American IPAs and stouts and have recently implemented a wild barrel program. They are always trying to push the boundaries of what can be done with beer in BC. Quality comes first and foremost, but in the end, it’s just a bunch of guys and girls having way too much fun brewing beer.

Can. Opaque. Thick head. Bright papaya, canteloupe and stone fruit. On the palate, the melon and papaya stand out the most. It's sweet, probably too sweet. Lots of alcohol in the finish. So the balance is a bit off for me, especially given the weakness of the malts. Takes more than hops to make a DIPA work.

On tap at Twin Sails, pours black with a medium brown head. Aroma is full of walnut extract, dark sugars, and intense bourbon. Flavour is very rich, with an intense bourbon character, dark sugars, some awkward walnut extract character, and a strange liquorice-y, almost perfumey fruitiness. I don't really get much cinnamon, although maybe that's contributing to the liquorice and fruit characters. Boozy but integrated, finishing almost like a cocktail more than a beer. It's got lots of elements, but I'm not very sold on the flavours. Good but doesn't work that well for me.

Can from the brewery
Murky blond colour. Nice aroma, citrus fruits. Lean mouthfeel, it's a bit creamy, and not chalky, it has some light residual sweetness; low bitterness, but there is some good, juicy hop there, sweet citrus character mainly.

16oz @ Alex's. Appearance: murky golden with a white head. Aroma: a bit dank and juicy, some citrusy notes. Taste: along the same lines, quite watery, somw weird malty notes, more prominent hops here compared to the Dat Juice. Overall: ok.

Can. Label design hits. The appearance of the beer, sadly, is the standard dull murky opaque. Medium head. On the nose, I'll say that it is pretty juicy. Moderate bitterness. It's got a lot of hops on the palate, too. It comes together fairly nicely...not as overtly orangey as the regular Dat Juice, more directly an APA.

When colder and just opened, there is a bit too much liquorice; then it get's mellower; it's moderately sweet, but not even enough facing the massive alcohol content; dark chocolate and roasted malt; a bit herbal, some tobacco, even light astringency; it may have some similarities with a Nocino, but it doesn't taste like walnut.I think I'm less impressed than when I had it from tap, still pretty tasty and complex.

Black, the head disappears quickly. Strong aroma of chocolate, Bourbon, maybe walnuts. Good body, sweet, but the alcohol is strong here, it dominates the sugars; dark chocolate flavour, the walnut is more evident initially, then it morphs into sweet liquorice (light), goes on till the finish, still juggling between alcohol and sugars.

Dark brown colour. Aroma of coffee, earthy. Medium body, this one could have been better supported by thicker body, more sweetness; dark caramel, burnt sugar, and coffee; it doesn't have the green pepper flaw, but there is a bit too much liquorice, and strong alcohol; mild earthiness.

Black, the head disappears quickly. Strong coffee aroma, some chocolate. Sweet, but also this one (like the Where's Walno) is lean, less residual sugar, strong alcohol probably here too, coffee, burnt sugar touch of wood, smoke. Intriguing, but less malt depth than I'd wish for.

Poured from the tap. Hazy dull blonde with small white head. I feel like TS was just getting rid of an old keg for this tap takeover event… mild guava, feint hint of mango, mild tartness, flavours seem to have dropped off, a bit bland.
