An interesting beer. Fresh, slightly thin body with a hint of wheat malt character. Easy drinkable with some discreet hoppynes make this beer quite difference to the other, much more hoppy beers from Nøgne Ø. I was told that this is an experiment; it’s a hybrid between wheat beer and ale. Instead of normal wheat yeast, a typical English ale yeast is used. Easy to misunderstand (according to some of our Danish rater friends), but give us an interesting evidence of how important the yeast is. Not my favourite from NØ, but an interesting and pleasant beer for the season. Remember this is not made to be a wit, open your mind!

Bottled. Dark cloudy orange with a relatively small head. Vaguely citrusy and yeasty aroma. Slightly thin-bodied taste of yeast and wheat malts, yielding to a surprisingly bitter hop taste with some sourness at the end. Unusual, somewhat interesting, and quite good.

Explosive bottle; black color. Light aroma, delicate roasted malt, light vanilla. A good Porter, quite velvety, nice coffeish note, with just a vanilla touch; some residual sweetness. Would be a very good Porter, better without the vanilla.

Rerate 13. April 2005: I deliberately avoided pouring the yeast in this time, beer is clear deep golden, like a bitter or an IPA. Flavour is more balanced, still a substantial bitterness but not unpleasant. Very little wheat character, in a blind test I’d say this was a decent IPA or possibly an ESB. Original rating: 500 ml, bottle conditioned. Batch #128. The brewers say this beer should be drunk on Easter Day and not during Lent. I’d better re-rate shortly after Easter - maybe they mean that the beer is too fresh now? Anyway, I HAD too try it now, once it was for sale - and our crazy Danish friends even beat me to it! The beer has a hazy golden, nearly orange colour. Initially large head, doesn’t last to the end. Lovely hoppy aroma with hints of citrus, honey and leather. Flavour is very bitter from start to finish (loads of hops and coriander, peppery mouthfeel) , while the beer otherwise is light bodied like a wheat beer should be. This means that the hops and spices are overdone here, and the subtleties of a wheat beer do not survive. Those who love American IPAs might like it, but to me this is my least favourite Nøgne Ø beer so far.

An unclear orange beer with a disappearing head. The aroma is lovely hoppy combined with notes of flowers. The flavor is sweet with notes of honey, hops, and spices - I can’t make out the most dominant spice, but coriander is in there somewhere. Not a very wheaty wheat beer.

Bottled. Dark brown. Cinnamon aroma. Fairly dry with medium body and rounded mouthfeel. Notes of oranges. Grassy finish with some licorice.

Bottled. Dark brown with rich head. Strong aroma of cocoa and cinnamon. Sweet, roasty anmd fairly mild with clean mouthfeel and lots and lots of cocoa powder flavour. Herbal spices rather than bitterness in the finish. Another pleasant beer from Nøgne Ø.

Thanks to Madberg for sending this Stateside! Big black pour that aroused a nice tan head. Strong aroma of Black Patent malt. The flavor comes first from the roast malt and then a yeast sourness in the middle with a long dry finish. Pleasant and different than most U.S. micro Stouts.
