May 2010: Green 33cl bottle, poured into a Hoegaarden Grand Cru stemmed tulip glass. Looks like a lager/pilsner, bright, clear and golden, with a white head that doesn’t hang around. Very floral in the nose and initial taste. I believe Taa Kawa is ’Fruits of the forest’ in the Maori tongue. The beer is flavoured with some native spice from the forests, hence the name. It has a different and interesting taste to be honest, an ’indigeous ale’ according to the bottle, but appears more of a lager/pilsner to my taste buds and eyes.

Bottled. Clear yellow color, short head. Aroma is a bit hoppy, somewhat grassy and grainy. Dry and bitter taste. Quite ok beer.

(Bottle 33 cl) Clear, deep golden with a small, rough, white head. Spicy, fruity aroma - almost cinnamon-like. Light-bodied, a little low in carbonation with spicy, fruity accents - perhaps a whiff of honey. There’s a discreet underlying acidity, but absolutely no bitterness. 050208

Shortlived off-white head, over slightly orange tinted golden beer, clear. Fresh, spicy nose. Spices seem familiar, yet I couldn’t name a single one. I seem to get Czech hops, which is rather unlikely. And chamomille. Bitterish at first, faint spicy and even fainter fruit. As some unripe kiwifruit, without the acidity, or a very dull lime. Very carbonated, near-fizzy. Ends watery, and that is its Achilles’ heel. I guess this would perform admirably on a hot summers’ terrace. In front of my computer, in a chilly winter room, it is more than a bit thin. All the same, thanks, Stefaan!

Gold, fast fading white head. Light skunky nose. Light skunky, light malt profile. Definitely not an ale, more of a macro lager
