Description

New quad by Wilderen, bottle from Van Eetvelde in Lokeren. Strong gusher. Thick, frothy, regularly shaped, pale yellowish beige, moussy, dense head over a deep purplish burgundy coloured, translucent, lightly hazy beer with ruby red hue. Perfumey and sweet aroma of Belgian chocolates, banana and even some bubblegum, liquorish, chocolate liqueur, butterscotch, candi sugar, baker’s yeast, cake, toasted brown bread, honey, (quite a lot of) soapy coriander, white pepper, sugared tea, hint of damp forest floor. Candied sweetness in the mouth, dates and raisins, pear syrup, candi sugar, lots of ripe banana, with a slight, softly sourish edge; full, rounded, notably resinous, thick mouthfeel, thick caramelly and honeyish malt sweetness with a very light toasted edge in the end. Finishes in more malt and residual sugar sweetness balanced by a dash of spicy hops, a coating of bittersweet soapy coriander and the expected glow of warming, brown rhum- and liqueur-like alcohol, heavy in the back of the mouth, but somehow managing to avoid blatant astringency. Nice winter warmer, a bit straightforward perhaps, but ’full’ and rich enough to qualify as a recommendable quadrupel, if you like this style sweet and opulent; a tad more bitterness and less candyish sweetness would, however, have served this beer better, but I guess its sweetness is a commercial issue, in order for it to be appreciated by a large audience. Standard, but all things considered, not badly done - just too bad for the gushing, of course.

Bottled (from Willems, Grobbendonk). Golden colour, mediumsized white head. Aroma is alcohol, some spices, mild toffee as well as some citrus and mild nectary notes. Flavour is nectar, some fruits, mild yeast as well as quite strong gluelike stinging alcohol. I bit thin in the flavour, considering the big alcohol punch. Hence a bit out of balance.
