A deep red beer with a huge orange-brown head. The aroma is sweet with notes of berries (strawberries, red currant et.al.), wood, and is quite sweet. The flavor is sweet with notes of berries (somewhat artificial), spices - some cinnamon, and a little wood. The mouthfeel is quite carbonated - with the bubbles bursting on the tongue. The alcohol really doesn’t kick in until after You swallow, then it leaves You with a warmth in the mouth combined with a dryness and notes of berries.

Schmeckt am Anfang dem Blond ähnlich, der Nachgeschmack ist hier allerdings gar nicht gelungen! Man schmeckt den Alkoholgehalt deutlich heraus, da muss ich ja schon das Gesicht verziehen bei dem Geschmack. Bitte nie mehr! Test vom 17.3.2005, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 8,6,4,2,9,4 - 4,65

Antrunk weizentypisch, aber nicht so viel CO2 wie ein selbiges. Der Alkohol ist nicht zu schmecken, im Mittelteil fruchtig frisch und schön süffig. Der Nachgeschmack ist leicht säuerlich und hält nicht sehr lange an, geht aber in Ordnung. Im großen und ganzen gut trinkbar, eine weitere Flasche würde ich nciht abschlagen. Bottled. Hazy golden, small head. Grassy nose. Fruity and sweet. Flowery hops dries the beer out towards the resiny finish. A straightforward ale with some almond character.

Gushing to ludicrously huge, yellow-beige head with confluent bubbles; some amount of red-brown ale underneath. Meaty, yeasty nose with brown malts, tip of sulphur, smells of cattlefeed. Chocolatey, bitterish taste, some hops there. Finish is a bit sourish, very slightly so. The malts are there, but the bitterish-roasted onset, and the end acidity take away all sweetimpression. Bit fatty MF, fatty acids? Medium bodied, reasonably dry. Ho-hum dubbel. I wonder about all the strange insertions;

A pale golden beer with a huge white head. The aroma is primarily of straw. The flavor is sweet with notes of straw and grain, giving it a sweet bitter end. But the body is thin.

Bottle Creamy, white head. Hazy, yellow body. Nose of hops: flowers, grss, hints of citrus. Moderately sweet, lightly bitter initial flavour. Moderately bitter, moderately sweet finish.

Sample quite old. Named "Cuvée de l’Ermitage Christmas", but quite certainly identical to the regular Ermitage Deep red-brown beer; creamy, yellowish head, not stable. Fruity nose (grapes, nuts, raisins, Studentenhaver), madeirisation, liquorice, cinnamon hint, brandycake with a bit of chocolate topping. Still an unmistakable Union stamp: the harsh break between sweet and bitter, even when age has mellowed the suddenness of it. Even the older, stronger version had a real treshold between the sweet and bitter malts. A traditionally unbalanced beer. Madeirisation, liqueurish. Once the break done, rather nicely filled palate, very good body. But in the aftertaste remains a sharp, bitterish tang. One of Belgium’s classics - one I never dug. But it is a "must try" all the same.

An orange beer with a huge light brown head. The aroma is sweet with notes of coriander and yeast. The flavor is very sweet with lots of coriander and oranges, before the alcohol makes it mark, by warming the mouth. The end is dry spicy both from coriander and hops.

Nice red-amber color with small foamy white head. Fresh hoppy aroma with some anise and herbs. Medium to full bodied, oily palate with warming alcohol. Sweetish with fruity hops. Light bitter hoppy aftertaste. Very nice balanced brew, almost more like English than Belgium Ale.
