Description
Young Master Brewery was born out of a desire to brew distinctive, world-class beers locally for Hong Kong. With this project, our goal is to revive the craft brewing tradition in Hong Kong and bring the local drinking experience up a notch. Our beers are brewed fresh with the highest quality ingredients. We insist on preserving everything that’s good and natural about freshly brewed beer. To this end, we do not filter, pasteurize, or add artificial stabilizers or chemicals to our products simply to extend their shelf-life. We also use naturally produced carbon dioxide during fermentation and do not artificially carbonate. Our beer will be the freshest you can find in Hong Kong with the least distance traveled from grain to your glass.

Pour from a bottle @ BeerFes Yokohama, September 17th, 2017. I think this was leftover from The International Beer Cup 2017, held at the same location during previous days. Light golden pour, not much carbo. Nose is sour, mango, funky and fruity. Taste nice fruity sour, full of berries. Really good. Some light spice tingle in the back of my throat, berries. Liking this, a lot.

Pour from a bottle @ BeerFes Yokohama, September 17th, 2017. I think this was leftover from The International Beer Cup 2017, held at the same location during previous days. Pours nice white hazy, some foam. Juicy hoppy nose, NE at its best. Goes down easy, like juice, fake juice. Bitterness is low but tropics and fruits are high. Some light hop juice tingle remains lingering for a while longer. Good example of a style and one of the best finds of a day.

Bottle from Brewcraft at home. Opaque dark brown slightly dusty pour with thin dissipating tan head. Aroma is strong raspberry, chocolate, vanilla, alcohol burn. Like a boozy Black Forest cake. Impressive if not my favorite flavor. Taste is similar - sharp berry tart, some dark cocoa, alcohol. Not as huge as the chili version? Very sweet from the berries. Vanilla maybe more present as a result (than in the chili one). Interesting but wouldn’t get again except maybe as dessert.

Bottle from Brewcraft at home. Dark black pour minimal medium tan head. Aroma is sharp powerful dark fruit, spicy booze, some chili. Taste is similar - very bright from dark fruit then chili. Spicy and boozy. Lingering warm boozy finish with a tart spiciness. Lots going on. Also - if I didn’t have the raspberry version of this beer side by side, this one would seem to have an almost raspberry-like berry tartness. Less chocolate than expected. All balanced quite nicely. Light palate for such a huge beer. Barrel aging present in more subtle ways than usual - no huge vanilla oak, but some round booziness. Very interesting. Nicer than the raspberry one. Had a bunch since this first review. Holds up very well. Alongside the Young Master Double Yu Imperial Stout, which I loved, this seems even better, with the aging mellowing the chili without taking anything away. Raised 3.9 —> 4.2 (Double Yu is 4.1) Opened an old bottle from 2019 in Feb 2022. Very spicy! Bitter spicy alcohol burn is really strong, but with a good mellow wood. Still excellent. (Raised 4.1–> 4.3)

Big thanks! 330 ml. Bottle split by two @ “HKHK” Tasting. The chili version was great but this one doesn’t work. Raspberry is badly integrated, oddly strangely vegetable, other one wasn’t the thickest RIS but it worked but this comes across as thin, flat, vegetable with plastic, herbal. Disappointing. Dark brown, not black, little head. Nose is odd thin plastic & vegetable raspberry jam, herbal mocha & cacao. Taste is odd, flat plastic, vegetable, herbal, herbal mocha, cocoa, oddly alcoholic in the finish. Too bad, expected far more but this didn’t succeed.
