Bottle from Enniskillen; either infected or a new flemish sour stout; Nose is tartness and chocolate; clear brown with a small tan head; flavor of coffee and vinegar; would of liked some fresh!

Deep purplish burgundy colour. No head. Aroma of black currant, peppery alcohol, pears, candyish malt. Fruit-first, moving towards a muscular alcohol finish. The malts - while clearly candyish - remain in the background and gracefully disassociated from the currant. Nicely balanced.

Dark brown with ruby highlights. No head, unfortunately. Chocolatey, nutty aroma promises depth. Body is moderate, as is the sweetness. Hints of nut, chocolate, muscovado. Probably could use a bit more fullness but what’s here is quality.

Bright pale copper colour. No head. Aroma has slight melon, honey and a little hint of malty earthiness. Flavour is mild - watery, even - with hints of honey and vague fruitiness (peach?). Really a quick, harmless trifle of a beer, like a Hugh Grant movie or an early Beatles tune.

Draught at the brewpub
Black body with light tan head. Good sugars and roast on the nose. I was immediately put off on the first sip by the tartness...I wasn’t expecting that. Once I knew what I was getting into, though, the beer came round nicely. Roasty, tart, with soft chocolatey malts. Very refreshing finish. Light body, too. This really drinks like a 4% stout, which in the summer it probably ought to be, but either way it’s a very nice stout, something we don’t get enough of in BC.

Bright golden with copper tint. Thin head. Woody hop nose with hints of grapefruit. Passion fruit, pink grapefruit and dalandan taste with light woodiness and subtle bready malts. Moderate bitterness ends up slightly overstated due to the low finishing gravity (OG 1050 and 6% abv). A light hint of resin amidst the bitter citrus finish. Refreshing.

Golden-amber colour. Fresh grainy aroma. The flavour is mainly of fresh pale malt, with a little crystal thrown in for fun. There is some late, leafy hop as well. The fresh grain aroma rates excellent but the flavour didn’t follow through with enough conviction.

A burgundy accent to the dark brown body. Loose head. Almond shell, hints of herbs, a bit of roast and light diacetyl feature in the nose. Sweet flavour with only hints of roast and chocolate.

Chestnut brown colour. It’s a bit cold to get much aroma...silly a brewpub serving such a beer at 4C when they have a 10C fridge as well. But what I get from the nose is a bit nutty with quite a bit of diacetyl. Flavour is pretty much the same - nutty with way too much diacetyl for my admittedly low threshold palate.

Cask handpull at Spinnaker’s, Victoria. Black with red edges. Lasting tan head. Liquorice tarry stout, some choc, little bit of smoke, smooth in mouth leads to a molasses dryness on end. Some smokey charcoal, nice, but again lacks a bit of depth. Nice enough
