Description
Waterloo Beer is brewed with care in the Mont-Saint-Jean farm, the famous 'English Hospital' of the Battle of Waterloo. More than ever, this high-quality beer is a symbol of authenticity, craftsmanship and courage. In 1815, during the famous conflict, the troops were supplied with high-fermented beer that gave them strength and courage to face each other. Two centuries later, Anthony Martin is proud to revisit this moment in history by reviving the local beer quality, prepared strictly according to the original recipe: Waterloo – beer of bravery!

Gushing (-1) to huge yellow-brown head over gorgeous deep ruby-brown (+1) beer. Sweet bready & leafy nose, roasted malts, sweet. Burnt-bitter flavour overlying more sweet malts. Some leafy notes, but generally quite dull. Well-bodied, near-chewy, bit fizzy. Some might argue balance, I would rather maintain lifeless...

Very good, creamy & yellowish head, fed by good carbonation in golden, toast-coloured beer. Quite spicy nose, horseradish, mustard powder, Szechuan pepper; some EU hops obvious. Pretty decent, inviting nose, ending on some salty S-link. Quite dry flavour, more rootspices and white candi sugar; ending pretty bitterish, even a bit metallic even. Only warming up reveals more sweetness, as well as a bit of vanilla. Very carbonated, and well-attenuated. Bit creamy MF, all the same. I’m nearly tempted to regard it as original - whatever, this is a more than decetn, if a bit weak tripel by Du Bocq.

Smooth chocolate and caramel aroma, with a vinous, fruity flavor that is sweet but well balanced. Very smooth with great body. This was a big surprise. Very well made dubbel. This unanimously thumped Westmalle Dubbel and Chimay Red in a 4-person blind tasting we had.

Bottle at Monk, Brussels, 25-07-08 This beer was served in an earthenware mug like the dubbel so colour was difficult to determine (appeared golden) some light fruits and spices on the nose, flavour was similar but little sweet, bit malty its fine but dressing something up by presenting it in an expensive earthenware mug (which Barry later liberated) isn’t going to make it taste any better.

Bottle at Monk, Brussels, 25-07-08 This beer was served in an earthenware mug so colour was difficult to determine (looked brown) This is a fairly simple inoffensive dubbel, quite smooth some soft candy and demarara sugar, malty and I keep coming back to the sweetness maybe a little too sweet, its ok.

Bottled. Golden colour with some small particles floating around. Small white head. Aroma is wooden, a bit sour as well as interesting bittery notes. Flavour is bittery wood with some hints of apple and grassyness. Hides the alcohol very well, making it a wellbalanced and nice refreshing brew.
