Bottle from O’Brien’s, Athlone [080515]
Copper bronze, good colour, clear, frothy white head, some lacing, head dissipates
Aroma of sweet fruits, soft mincemeat, raisins, sweet spices, soft gingerbread, juicy spiced fruits
Taste of soft spicy cinnamon, sweet fruity caramel, doughy malts, mince pie, nice soft spices, gingerbread, juicy malts, tasty
Palate - Soft carb, medium body, sweet soft spicy, alcohol completely hidden. Finish of spicy juicy malts with spiced dough in the afters
Overall - Often Christmas ales have the spices ’chucked in’ and are often overdone and astringent. Here they are soft, have depth and are well integrated. No booze at all. Really good beer.

11.15 oz. bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Nose brings out roasted malt, some oats, and lightly sweet cocoa. Flavour is quite robust and well-balanced, with cocoa, oats, and light roast. Medium-to-heavy bodied with medium sweetness. This is an exercise in balance. Everything is done well. Excellent.

On tap at The Black Sheep, pours an opaque orange with a small off-white head. Nose brings out lots of piney and resinous hops. Flavour brings out resinous hops and caramel malt to back. Quite sweet from the malt, but the resinous hops are still quite dominant. Solid IPA.

Draught at Copoer’s Craft and Kitchen. Hazy reddish dark amber with very small off-white foamy head, that turns into a ring quickly, almost no discernible aroma, medium carbonation, smooth fruity taste, taste of berries in the background, abrupt finish with a little berry aftertaste. The high alcohol is very successfully masked, surprisingly drinkable.
