About
Modern Times is a 30bbl production brewery and tasting room in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego. Modern Times is named after a beautifully crazy utopian community founded in 1850 (see “Modern Times was..” for the full explanation), and (almost) all of our beers are named after real utopian experiments or mythological utopias.

Poured from 650mL bottle (2020 vintage). Very dark brown with small tan head. Very vanilla forward, mild coconut and bourbon, decent. Vanilla overpowers a touch.

22 oz. bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma is full of intense marshmallows, a touch of coconut, and a touch of bourbon barrels. Flavour has gentle coconut, marshmallows, some graham crackers, and a truckload of vanilla beans. A bit less complex and refined than the average MT BA beer, but still very nicely put together of course.

Dark brown. No head. Aroma has a lot of marshmallows, graham crackers. Big marshmallows, graham crackers, honey. That coffee note, too.

22 oz. bottle, pours black with a tiny head. Aroma has a complex whiskey barrel character, gentle bourbon, and somewhat attenuated out dark sugars. Flavour is super rich, with big bourbon barrels, dark sugars, some vanillin, and booze. Real nice bourbon barrel character, with huge depth. Wonderful as usual.

Dark brown, looks oily. Not much head. It doesn't smell like an imperial stout, with a light nuttiness, fairly boozy. On the palate, it's got a fair bit of barrel. The base malt is soft, malty, figgy, layers of bourbon, a touch of vanilla, and a big alcohol splash. I like this - comes across more like a barley wine to me, not super.

Black. Dark brown head. Rich chocolatey aroma, light vanilla. Big bitterness, chocolate, solid rye barrel. Toasty and tannic, with intense black sugar. The rye character is excellent, and the interplay between the rye and the black sugar malt richness, vanilla sweetness, tannins and alcohol is fantastic.

22 oz. bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma is full of intense vanilla beans, spicy rye whiskey barrels, and some dark sugars. Flavour is very rich and dense, with a wonderful mix of deep vanilla beans, light spiciness from the rye whiskey, attenuated dark sugars, and some dark fudge. That’s a succulent vanilla bean character atop a rich malty base. Excellent.

Poured from 650mL bottle. Very dark brown with minimal beige head. Lots of sharp vanilla, rye whiskey, a bit boozy, decent, but some harshness.
