Description
Modern Times is a 30bbl production brewery and tasting room in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego. Modern Times is named after a beautifully crazy utopian community founded in 1850 (see “Modern Times was..” for the full explanation), and (almost) all of our beers are named after real utopian experiments or mythological utopias.

Original rating from 4/8/2014. 16 ounce can poured into a tulip. Pours a straw to golden yellow with slightly over 2 fingers of frothy off-white head. Good lacing. Aromas of wheat, floral notes, citrus and tropical fruit. Tasting notes of citrus, light tropical fruit, wheat, floral hops. Medium body with a bitter and dry finish. Juicy mouthfeel, medium carbonation. Possibly my favorite session beer so far. 8/4/8/4/14
Had again on 8/30/2016. 16 oz pour on draft at Meridian Pint courtesy of Kenny from Pekko, thanks! Not much to add to my previous rating, mostly just a slight score tweak. Very tasty and refreshing, especially after walking in the hot weather. 8/4/9/4/17

500mL can, courtesy of Prufrockstar (thanks a lot, Chris), pours a clear pale yellow with a large white head. Aroma is quite tropical fruit heavy and hoppy, with dry grains - very inviting. Flavour is wonderfully hoppy, with kiwi and maybe other tropical fruits, a touch of grassiness, and a dry cereal backing. So highly drinkable - the kiwi-like hoppiness is killer. Excellent thirst quencher.

Pitch black color. Light frothy brown head. Very nice dry roasty coffee nice. The mouth lacks the acidity that many people like in stouts, but this is how I like my stouts. Big coffee notes with modest roastiness. Smooth and rounded. Hops are quit low. Lingering coffee finish. Very quaffable.

16 ounce can poured into a Belgian snifter. Pours black with brown hues and almost a finger of light tan head. Decent lacing that fades fairly quickly. Aromas of sweet and roasted coffee, caramel, vanilla, coffee grounds. Tasting notes of roasted coffee, oats, caramel/toffee, a bit of dark chocolate. Medium-light body with a semi-dry finish. Medium carbonation, slick and slightly creamy mouthfeel. Surprisingly delicious for a stout just under 6% ABV.

Sample from 50 cl. can. Lovely dark, amber colour with a reddish tint. Thin, off-white head. Roasted aroma with coffee beans, chocolate, bitter fruits, red berries and caramel malts. Taste is bitter. Medium to full body with a creamy texture. Very good for the alcohol content. Finishes dry and roasted with dark chocolate. Very fine Stout.
