It’s so great that you like coffee. I just love that about you. Speaking of which, you’re holding an oatmeal coffee stout positively redolent with coffee aroma and flavor. It kind of tastes like a chocolate-covered espresso bean, only drier and more like beer. Nifty fact: we’re one of the only breweries in the world to roast our own coffee, which allows us to be extremely persnickety about which beans we buy and how we roast them. Taste the persnicketiness!

Can from the lcbo. Dark brown pour, large brown head. Lots of roast, and a surprising amount of cocoa in the nose also. Obviously lots of coffee, but it's soft and not in your face. Low bitterness, lingering roast and coffee notes.

Nitro tap @Beer Zombies. Charcoal black, thin creamy head. Saline & medium coffee roast nose. Taste is mellow roast, barely there gentle roast, burnt raisin, subtle dark chocolate sweetness. A touch thin & really dusty. Good but expected great.

Can, 0.473l. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, licorice and caramel. Pours clear dark brown color with thick soapy light brown head and average sparkling appearance. Taste starts with mild sweet chocolate, coffee and vanilla, following is rich roasted malty, earthy and slightly sour, mouthfeel is smooth, mild spicy and rather dry, while finish is average bitter. Medium body, creamy texture and average carbonation in palate. Heavy roaster…

Coffee stout from this renowned brewery in San Diego, apparently a troubled company now; can from Hopt, the former Saveur Bière, taken over by AB InBev. Thin and open, pale greyish beige 'ring' for a head, eventually dissolving completely over an ink black robe with burgundy edges. Aroma of indeed coffee and lots of it (black coffee, espresso powder), beef stock cubes, burnt toast, cooked bayleaf, wet leather, used coffee filters, old walnuts, unsugared chocolate but subtly so, deep-fried parsley, tea bags, 'Maggi', marmite, hints of rusty iron, hard caramel and clotted blood. Dryish onset, some malt fruitiness but very low in esters, vague reminiscences of unripe pear and dried blueberry perhaps, softish carb, still full and rounded mouthfeel, oily and thicker than the relatively modest ABV would suggest; roasted walnutty, hard-caramelly malts, quickly shifting to coffeeish roasty bitterness, with indeed a lot of retronasal cold black coffee dominating the finish - next to lingering 'beef stock cube' umami (just a tad too much so for my personal liking) and a vague underlying metallic touch. Leafy, herbal to almost tea-like hops in the finish support the coffee effect well, but that beef stock thing persists too, making for an ending of umami and bitterness, though not in a harshly dry way; the flavours are tied together quite well, but that umami (even 'Maggi'-like) aspect does bother me a bit. Solid coffee stout, all things considered, but the coffee could have been more bitter and aromatic and I did have some trouble giving this beef-stocky effect a place. Enjoyable but expected more, in view of this brewery's reputation...

473ml Blik van Beer Republic. Zwarte kleur, beige kraag. Koffie, koffie met melk, ruikt als een klassieke Engelse stout, redelijk gebrand, bitter, iets van caramel. Vrij dun voor 5.8%. Degelijk, maar geen uitschieter.

can dark brown, light brown head. strong aroma of cofee powder, mild roasted malts, dark chocolate. flavor is lots of coffee, some really dark chocolate, roasted malts, toffee, faint licorice, good lingering dark beery aftertaste. A really good traditional stout, not so strong, but lots of flavor albeit a bit watery, like a guinness. If you feel like a solid but not alc. heavy stout this is a good choice. (at 5.8%).
