Bottle at home for Vikings premiere seemed appropriate huge thanks to buddy of mine DK for getting me this. Nose is light but lovely fruity pear and apple and dry yeast. Tastes of pear, some pine, yeast, hay, lemongrass, touch of spearmint. Very dry. Wow always loved visiting the cape but this brewery could make even more appealing.

Wow, pours a rich thick brown from a cask. Aroma is a slightly sour sweet mishmash, almost and without a negative context, wet tobacco. My friend thought there were smoky notes, I didn’t pick up on those. The raspberry came through with a sort of sickly sweetness. Very weird, pungent beer that by the bottom was entirely appreciated for its difference and frankly its balance in a bunch of weird things. Pretty good beer.

32 oz. Crowler share by Matt B. Crystal clear golden color. Smells of corn adjuncts, grain, and hints of honey. Mouthfeel has low carbonation with a sweet grain aftertaste. Flavor is of roasted grains, and biscuits. Finishes very tame with no lingering aftertaste at all. Drinkability is decent. Not bad but of course nothing to get excited about.

Bottled 12/8/15, drunk 3/12/16.
Nicely unfiltered, bottle conditioned pour shows just a light bit of haze in the copper liquid with tons of white head showing strong retention.
Tons of dough, black pepper, star fruit, light lemon and tangerine show none of the brett. Seems like at three months it should have emerged, but it’s just all saison yeast, phenol and lightly citrusy hops. A slight alcoholic edge is the only thing that detracts. Biscuits, vanilla, tea, light honey.
In the mouth, a malty, but well-attenuated texture with tight carbonation immediately entices. Lemon and orange citrus notes join black and white pepper phenols with white bread, very light honey and plentiful floral notes. Again, there is a touch of alcohol sharpness, but otherwise, this is a fine, albeit somewhat messy rendition of a classic saison. Not in love with the hop profile, though they aren’t resinous or problematic. Would just prefer herbal and spicy notes to the light citrus and grass. Odd that you don’t get much of the brett. But perhaps it was added at primary? That may explain the heavy pepper and light sharpness that I associate with primary brett fermentation. Regardless, this is a very competent, ambitious saison that shows great promise from these brewers.
