Description
Daisen G Beer is a craft beer brewery located in Tottori prefecture, in the Chugoku region, just north of Okayama. Located at the base of Mt. Daisen, which is more commonly known as Hōkifuji in the area, the brewery opened in 1997 as an off-shoot of the sake producing company Kumezakura Shuzō and San-in Sanso Corporation, a company that deals with high-pressure gas. The local area is famous for its clear spring water, sourced from the snow at the top of the mountain, and its black soil, kuroboku in Japanese, which is said to be some of the most fertile in Japan. This fertile soil has resulted in Daisen G Beer being able to grow its own barley, in the form of Daisen Gold, in the spring; Daisen G Beer’s own hops, called Weihen Hop, which are harvested in the summer, and also Yamadanishiki, a sake yeast that is used in the production of the beers such as Daisen G Yagō.

Draught at Golden Garden in Hiroshima. Sweet but not cloying, with rich wheat malt. Quite estery, with no sour edge at all. Very drinkable and rich. Nicely done.

Bottle, 1 month over its date. Jet black with a frothy tan head. Chocolate, sweet, slightly fruity aroma, sweet, chocolate flavor, with burnt wood and coffee. A bit fruity as well. Nice balance, not overly complex. Nothing wrong with it either. Enjoyable.

Draught at Beer Belly. Spicy, firy aroma. Flavors of pear, banana, clove. Good hops--with a dry, bitter finish. Not like a wheat bock. Very hoppy, fruit, and spicy. Excellent. Creamy, wine-like, with dark fruits galore. Just kept getting better as it warmed.

Tap at Beer Belly—they called it an ale, and I didn’t doubt it at the time. Dark brown with orange, medium sized, tight white head. Aroma of caramel, cocoa, decent but light hops. Medium light flavor, decent balance. Hops ok, with caramel. Not rich or luscious at all, but refreshing and tasty. Nice caramel and decent hopping but not very special.

Draught at Ushi-Tora, Tokyo. Hazy golden, minimal head. Vanilla, banana and grains in a careful aroma. Clean on the surface, but with depth underneath. Alcohol mingles with vanilla, herbal spices and orange, restrained sweetness. All the time it remains careful and unintrusive, elegant and cool.
