Description
Emile Vanhonsebrouck and his wife Louise De Poorter founded the Sint Jozef brewery in Ingelmunster. In 1922 the brothers Paul and Ernest Van Honsebrouck take over the brewery from their mother. In 1953 Luc Van Honsebrouck (son of Paul) becomes director. Luc realizes that the small Sint Jozef brewery isn't able to compete with the large pils breweries. He therefore decides to concentrate on the production of an old brown beer, naming it Bacchus, and he changes the name of the brewery to Vanhonsebrouck. The St-Louis Gueuze and Kriek were officially launched in 1958. In 2009 Xavier Vanhonsebrouck succeeds his father Luc. In 2016 the doors of the old brewery in Ingelmunster are permanently closed. The new site in Emelgem is now home to a brand new, fully integrated brewery, with the equipment to produce all of the Vanhonsebrouck beers. In the meantime Kasteel Brouwerij Vanhonsebrouck becomes the new official name.

Keg at Crow Inn in Sheffield - deepest red body, slightly pink hued top. Massive raspberry jam and tart berry hit from the start, slightly drying, but very quaffable.

A small bottle from the off-licence opposite Jing Mei fire station. Aroma: very fresh yeast, slightly piney. Appearance: clear honey amber, lots of bottom up aeration, gargantuan rocky head. Palate: full-bodied and rather oily, softish carbonation; smooth finish, warming afterburn. Taste: medium-sweet with some sour notes, rock candy mixed with sherbet, booze is smooth. Bit too sweet for me, but pretty good nonetheless.

Not a fan. Sickeningly sweet. Took about two sips and the drain took the rest of the sips.

0.375 l bottle from 'Brauart', bottled in May 2025. Clear, very deep ruby with a medium large, frothy, almost stable, beige head. Sweetish, rather fruity, a bit artificial aroma of cherry juice, almond and sherbet powder. Quite sweet, a little sourish, quite fruity and minimally artificial taste of cherry juice, almond, some sherbet powder and a touch of oak, followed by a short, a little tartish, moderately bitter finish. Medium body, a little astringent and gently effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Too sweet for my liking but nevertheless a decent brew.

0.25 l bottle from 'Brauart', best before May 2027. Slightly hazy, deep orangeish amber with a medium large, frothy, slowly diminishing, white head. Sweetish, slightly sourish, gently fruity and slightly funky aroma of overripe lemon, cheese, dark honey and light vanilla. Quite sweet, moderately bitter, gently fruity and a bit funky taste of overripe lemon, dark honey, some vanilla and a touch of oak, followed by a short, moderately tart finish. Medium body, a little astringent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Typical sweetened Gueuze, quite faro-ish, not the real deal but easily drinkable. Could have been much worse.
