New commissioned Anders beer, this one intended to commemorate the tornado that struck the Flemish town of Malle in 1967; tornadoes are such a rare phenomenon in Belgium that apparently festivities are held there to commemorate the event and the combination of "Belgium" and "festivities" almost automatically leads to some or other new beer. In this case, the people that initiated it seeked to recreate a style of beer that was popular in Belgium in 1967 - and ended up with an old school EPA (English pale ale), like the Bass and Whitbread ones that were drunk in huge quantities back then; it is apparently brewed with four barley varieties and also four hop varieties. Medium thick, moussy, somewhat loosely knit but nonetheless stable, off-white, opening head over a hazy ochre-tinged, deeply peach blonde, near-amber beer. Aroma of fresh oranges, honey, canned peaches, quite prominent diacetyl (buttermilk - sample is probably too young), ginger powder, tulips and other sweet flowers, yellow raspberries, (unsalted) peanuts, cloves, pear, pineapple, banana, caramel. Fruity onset, banana and peach notes soaked in a notable, bright sweet orange-like flavour, light pineapple-like sourish accent too, strong and very notably minerally carbonation (bit overcarbonated in fact), even with a faint metallic note to it. Supple, smooth, caramelly and lightly nutty malt body, cereally, with the diacetyl subtly returning retronasally alongside spicy phenols and that orange-like, refreshing effect; mildly peppery, floral hop bitterness, some lingering bready yeastiness too. Feels quite vibrant and crisp, a bit rounder, yeastier and sweeter than the classic EPA this is trying to refer to; in fact much more interesting than that, as a 21st-century 'update' of this all but obsolete style. Other than the diacetyl, no obvious flaws here either (Anders being quite trustworthy in that respect to begin with, of course) so I must admit that this was considerably more interesting than I was expecting.
