Description
TOMKA Company is the oldest producer of mead in Slovakia. Their mead has been produced by the traditional process of fermentation of honey dissolved in water, with no added distillates, and no herb or fruit ingredients. The quality honey sufficiently endows the beverage with a beautiful amber colour and sweet aroma. During the long period of maturation in oak barrels in a 300 years old cellar in the town of Nitra, the mead gains the typical bitter-sweet flavour.

Pours clear, medium dark colored gold. Scent is funky, sharp, herbal almost. Not as pronounced honey as I expected. Nettles come to mind. Taste is semi-sharp, mild sweetness remains. Herbal, but more like actual green matter (nettles, again) than dried, highly aromatic spices you'd get in a Methenglin. Still, pronounced unique character. not sure if I'm a fan of it though I can appreciate it for just that feature.

Small clear glass bottle, pours a clear pale golden blonde. Nose brings out medium sweet wildflower honey, with light floral notes and booze. Flavour is much sweeter than the nose suggests, with heavy wildflower honey and lots of alcohol showing its full colours. Not a whole lot of complexity, but it's very nice in its boozy, sweet simplicity.

Small clear glass bottle purchased earlier this summer at Mead Museum in Prague. Marked Plnené: 11/2016. Sampled on December 16, 2017.Clear straw yellow to pale golden color, still and no head at all, also no legs on the glass when swirled. Honey, sweet, fruity, floral, alcohol scent. Sweet, honey, berries, floral, some heather taste. Raisin, some port aftertaste. Some warming alcohol in the mouth and also a tad when going down. In the aroma some notes going towards solvents, can also hint at them right when swallowing and towards the very first part of the aftertaste. Soft full mouthfeel, fairly sweet finish with a touch tartness. A bit too sweet for me, still very nice and enjoyable.7/3/8/4/15=3.7
