Description
Grolsch was first brewed in Groenlo in 1615 by Willem Neerfeldt. Peter Cuyper, son-in-law of Neerfeldt, was appointed master of the Grolsche brewing guild in 1676. Cuyper died in 1684, after which his descendants continued the business. Until 1876, the beer was brewed in the center of Groenlo. In that year brewery 'De Klok' built a new brewery outside the city. In 1895 it was bought by Theo de Groen, a descendant of a Zevenaar brewing family.

The De Groen family has upgraded the company from 1968 from a local brewery to an international company. Until 2004, Grolsch was brewed in Groenlo and Enschede. Since 2004, both locations have been closed and there is a new brewing factory in Boekelo-Usselo.

On 19 November 2007 the board of Royal Grolsch NV accepted a €816 million offer for the company by SABMiller. The takeover was completed with the delisting of Grolsch's shares on 20 March 2008. SABMiller subsequently sold the company to Anheuser-Busch InBev and in April 2016, the latter accepted Asahi Group Holdings Ltd.’s offer to buy not only Grolsch but also the Peroni and Meantime beer brands.

Can. Barley malt aroma. Light amber color with large head. Evenly blended flavor between the hops and malt with a dry finish. Decided to buy one again in the states to compare - pretty consistent, maybe a bit less palate and flavor but seems to have survive importation better than Heineken does (which tastes much better in the Netherlands). Still a pretty nice beer.

Can, alc. 4.2% (BB 01/2005)
Typical lager outlook. White foamy head. Mild metallic aroma. Carbonated mouthfeel, very mild malts. Some late bitterness. Very watery.

Clear amber color, big frothy off-white head. Aroma of caramel malts, sweet, bit dusty, some cardboard. Bittersweet taste, anis/anise/anice (whatever). Sweet palate.

The aroma is lightly sweet and malty with notes of caramel. The color is red-brown and it has no head. The flavor is very sweet with notes of caramel and the alcohol prickling the tongue. An OK beer - but not as good as I remember it from way before I was at ratebeer. It was probably special back then - but not anymore.

Can Good lager with hoppy aroma. This gives some personality to otherwise light to medium bodied "basic lager". Finishing flavor is average and moderately bitter. (5/3/6/3/11 2.8)
Re-rated, bottled, alc. 4.5% ABV (BB 03/2005)
Normal lager color with a good white head, lace. A bit skunked hoppy aroma. Medium bodied, sweety malts - almost like sweet corn - flavor with decent hoppy bitterness in the finish. Should be better when fresh. (5/2/4/3/10 2.4)

I find most Altbiers to be very refreshing yet lacking in overall intensity and this one fit that same pattern. I liked this better than the regular Grolsch Lager however, perhaps because it was in a brown, rather than a green, bottle. Pleasant but it's merely a stepping stone between American macros and the well crafted beers of the world.

When it's good it's good, when It's bad (which is most of the time) it's bad. In fact it's usually bad so often that people think it's supposed to be skunky. A step up from Heineken, but it's hard to find one that doesn't suffer from "Green Bottle Syndrome".

2010-04-03, mini 10cl bottle, as Kanon Schot, 6-4-7-3-14=34
Hazy amber color. Sweet aroma, nutty-malty. Oxidised. The flavor is a bit more interesting: sweet caramel and malt, with a nice raisin fruitness and just limited oxidisation. Is it saccharin what I feel in the end? Sweet and funny.

Golden color; big thick head. Strange aroma: rhum, raisins, malt. Strong body, alcoholic, warming, sweet, malty. Ends with a strong bitterness. Somehow surprising.

(fairly aged sample)Orange with pink shine, quite carbonated and faint haze, deposit somewhat in suspension; good yellowish white head, not stable. Warm honeyish nose, faint oxydation, nut butter; Sweet taste, but not overmuch. Alltime the typical honey flavour is apparent. This beer is made with addition of elderflower and limeblossom, so this makes sense. Retronasal I get a faint vegetable-bitterness. Rather thinnish texture, as honey dissolved in water. Certainly not a great beer, just a pleasing nice uncomplexed spiced ale.

(Obviously quite aged - one off) Amber-orange; foxy, creamy head, lacey. More fruity than spicey nose (sloeberry, apricot). Some spices at the end (ginger, coriander). Spicey-bitter taste, piquant even, but nothing over-the-top. Flavours much as from spiced liqueur. Surprisingly little oxidation. Medium bodied and light texture - maybe the only discernible effect of its age. Bitterish-spicey remains in the rather long aftertaste. Interesting beer. Resolutely spicey, but the necessary restraint has been observed. Well worth searching.
