Description
Grolsch was first brewed in Groenlo in 1615 by Willem Neerfeldt. Peter Cuyper, son-in-law of Neerfeldt, was appointed master of the Grolsche brewing guild in 1676. Cuyper died in 1684, after which his descendants continued the business. Until 1876, the beer was brewed in the center of Groenlo. In that year brewery 'De Klok' built a new brewery outside the city. In 1895 it was bought by Theo de Groen, a descendant of a Zevenaar brewing family.
The De Groen family has upgraded the company from 1968 from a local brewery to an international company. Until 2004, Grolsch was brewed in Groenlo and Enschede. Since 2004, both locations have been closed and there is a new brewing factory in Boekelo-Usselo.
On 19 November 2007 the board of Royal Grolsch NV accepted a €816 million offer for the company by SABMiller. The takeover was completed with the delisting of Grolsch's shares on 20 March 2008. SABMiller subsequently sold the company to Anheuser-Busch InBev and in April 2016, the latter accepted Asahi Group Holdings Ltd.’s offer to buy not only Grolsch but also the Peroni and Meantime beer brands.

Bottle. Clear dark brown with shades of red sporting a big but short-lived white head. Aroma of malts, red berries and hints of herbal hops. Taste of caramel, red fruits, malts, raisins, cherries, malt lozenges, sugar and some herbs. Low to moderate bitterness. Medium carbonation. Ok. Feels more balanced than the regular version.

300ml bottle [simply as "Grolsch Dunkel Weizenbock"]. Hazy, dark amber colour with small to average, frothy to creamy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, off-white head. Sweet-ish, caramel and wheaty malty as well as slightly phenolic, yeasty fruity aroma, notes of banana, baked banana, some honey. Taste is sweet, wheaty and caramel malty, yeasty fruity and minimally hoppy, notes of banana, baked banana, pear, a touch of red apple, some honey, caramel, a touch of milk chocolate; minimally leafy, hoppy finish.
Dissolved sugar enriched, watery texture, smooth, minimally cloying, simultaneously minimally dry palate, medium, mildly prickly carbonation.
Very sweet, quite monotonous, complete lack of spicy aspects - still OK.

30cl bottle from Valkenburg (Jumbo supermarket). Last beer of six in a mini tasting with myself and no one else at my place on 10th December 2025. Poured into a La Chouffe stemmed tulip it looked good, bright, clean and clear copper/amber body, off white crust on top. Caramel nose and sweet taste from start to finish. My sweet tooth liked it, but it's a bit one dimensional and artificial in nature, slightly disappointed to be honest. Wanted more depth and 'oomph'.

30cl bottle from the Jumbo supermarket in Valkenburg. Poured into a La Chouffe stemmed tulip glass at home on 7th December 2025. Copper bronze body, off white crust. Very sweet with a winter spice aroma/taste, cinnamon being a major player, too sweet for it's own good.

Bottle. Murky and sludgy brown with a massive beige head. Ugly for real. Aroma of overripe bananas, wheat and clove. Taste of bananas, caramel, clove, bubblegum, bread and wheat. Low to moderate bitterness. Medium carbonation. Almost creamy mouthfeel. I have to admit that Grolsch quite surprised me with this one.
