Growler. So this is supposedly made with a different yeast in 2014, but I wasn’t sure whether to add another entry or not for the beer. Website lists 7.0% ABV for it this year too. Pours a slightly hazy golden color with a massive head (the poor gal pouring it lost a lot of beer filling the growler!) Aromas of funk, honey and pear. Flavor is sweet with honey and light fruit but then this yields to a funky/peppery edginess. This is a sweeter saison and the mouthfeel and finish are sugary, but I tend to like that. ABV is amazingly well hidden and I would have never guessed 7%. A darn good beer!

From the March 2014 Pittsburgh Ratebeer gathering. +++ Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a medium sized foamy brown head that faded quickly and left decent lacing. The aroma was sweetish chocolate, a bit of anise and vague mint. The flavor was a bit roasty with mint, chocolate and almost an Oreo presence. Medium length cocoa and mint finish. Medium body and somewhat creamy. Odd but decent.

Bomber thanks to Dan. Pours a dark mahogany color with a large beige head. A sweet smoky light roasted malt nose. The flavor is nice: sweet caramel, bready, hell I get chocolate jello pudding, smoke, some sweet metallic notes. A solid porter. Very good actually.

Growler. Pours a deep brown with a thin head and aromas that at first are straight chocolate and cream. As it warms the peppermint starts to come out a bit and the flavor seems to follow suite. The first few sips are chocolate dominated with just a perfect little hint of peppermint, but as it warms, the peppermint becomes more and more pronounced and maybe a little abrasive at times. That said, this is a huge improvement over other stouts I have had with mint and I quite enjoyed this beer.

Growler. Pour is motor oil black with a big reddish brown head that holds aromas of coffee and coffee, a little cream that is a little like oatmeal, roasted barley and peat. The thing smells awesome! Flavor is very nice too. The beer kinda slides across the palate all silky like, but it has a pretty abrasive dark malt presence to it that creates an interesting juxtaposition between the two. It balances out nicely and hides its ABV well. Also, my hat goes off to the homebrewer who made the original recipe. Nice work!

From growler. Pours a crystal clear copper with a very sizeable head and a medley of hop aromas on the nose. Pine and resin are there as is a kind of earthy (chinook-like?) presence and a hint of tropical and citrus. Flavor has a bit too much grainy presence for my preference (but then this seems to go away as it airs and warms... kind of one of those silo dust flavors), but the hops balance it out fairly well. Lots of resin and a bit of a pineapple/tropical flavor that then fades back to resin on the finish. Mouthfeel is a bit thin and as it warms the hops come out even more. I’d drink this any day...

Sampled on draft at the brewpub this beer poured a dark brown color with a bit of orange and a large foamy-creamy beige head that lingered and left great lacing. The aroma was dry, malty, woody and a bit nutty. The flavor was dry, nutty and a bit woody with a faint roasty presence and a hint of caramel. Long nutty and woody finish. Medium body. Ok.

Sampled on draft at the brewpub this beer poured a clear very pale yellow with a trace white head that faded and left no lacing. The aroma was funky, sweet and citric. The flavor was dryish with an off lemonade presence and notes of bandaid and a hint of lager. Medium length dryish lemonade and lager. Light body and a bit flat. Blah.
