Description
Small Town Brewery is dedicated to crafting gruit-inspired beers. Gruit–German for herbs–describes the ancient practice of bittering ales with roots, spices, flowers, and berries. Tim Kovac, founder and brewmaster of Small Town Brewery, uses a proprietary technique to infuse a specialty blend of herbs and spices into his brewing process to create gruit-inspired beers with the unmistakable taste of nostalgia featuring classic American flavors.

Purchased at Bottles and Cans in Chicago, IL; enjoyed at home prior to getting the hell out of Chicago for a winter warm weather trip! I’m not going to sugarcoat this one - it’s boozy root beer. Appearance is root beer - black & fizzy. Aroma is root beer. Taste is root beer...with a touch of vanilla added and a kick. However - this stuff is really good. I’d prefer it to root beer, actually, and I would consider myself a fan of root beer. Well done Small Town people!

Bottle thanks to Phil. Pours a clear brown with no head. The aroma is AW root beer. Thin mouth with light booze and root beer, vanilla, very sweet, crazy.

Sample from bottle at Winking Lizard. The beer pours looking like root beer with a medium foamy light beige head that dissipates gradually. Partial rings of lace. Aroma of root beer and vanilla. The finish is sweet with a root beer and malt aftertaste. Pretty much exactly as advertized and very drinkable, above average overall.

12 oz bottle courtesy of Adam and his cats. Aroma is very similar to root beer with sugary notes along with the herbal, spiciness of the real thing. I don?t pick up any medicinal off notes at all. Pours a dark brown with a thin, tan head that quickly disappears. No lacing and faint legs. Flavor is a bit less sweet than the aroma suggests and less so than a soda. It also doesn?t have as strong of an herbal, spice note. A nice root beer character though with a bit of vanilla.Mouthfeel is medium full bodied and in a way thicker than a soda with medium low carbonation, less than a soda. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, an interesting and somewhat enjoyable experiment, but I would rather have a beer or a root beer. Better than the other hard root beer on the market. Starts to taste a bit medicinal as it warms.

5/14/15: I finally get to this straight at Fox & Hound in Aurora. In an admittedly generous tulip for such a strong beer, it is nearly a solid black except for some brown at the menses at the top. Bringing the Aroma up to 8 now that I get a ready heady whiff of root beer. This is a little more creamy on the nose. Taste has more solid root beer flavor, a bit bubbly, and very thick, like I got a soda with more syrup in the mix than normal. It’s a thick and rich brew. Admittedly it has more in common with root beer than a regular beer style, but unlike other "hard root beers," it has a clearly natural flavor of actual root beer ingredients. Thick, sweet and rich. Probably not meant for lunch, which is where I’m having it now, but more for dinner and dessert. I had this in a root beer float at Franklin Tap, then was afforded a small, straight sample. So, let?s rate this both ways. This sure acts like a root beer in the way that it foams around the ice cream. Color is a little more tan and the bubbles are tighter looking than for a carbonated soda. Others have remarked on how sweet this is, but I picked up a bit of acrid wood too, like there?s real sassafras in use. Takes the ice cream very well. Alcohol is not noticed, instead there?s some wintergreen. Only my taster with no ice cream showed a kick at the end.

Draft @ Lockdown served in a snifter. Black pour, filled to the brim with no head. So, I hate it when people do this but I am going to this... I hated this beer because it tasted exactly like what the beer is intended to taste like. Yup, it smells just like root beer and NOTHING ELSE - no way to know its a beer. The flavor is like a syrup Sambuca-like flavor with root beer. Again, no beer. Also, no sign of alcohol, which makes me really question this 20% thing. But the problem is I hate root beer. I know, I know.

Draft at tropical oasis campground in garden prarie il. My god, the alcohol is hardly noticeable. It just tastes like a thick syrupy rootbeer with a little warmth on the end. Wow.

Draft. This tastes just like wassail. Apple with cinnamon and baking spices. Damn its dangerously good and goes down super easy. A little sticky on the texture but still very awesome.
