473mL can. Pours hazy yellow with small white foamy head. Aroma has a lot of citrus and mango; generally stonefruit. Flavour had malts and citrus. Mouthfeel was chalky.

16oz shared with Alex (thx for the beer, man!) @ home. Appearance: very dark brown with a beige head. Aroma: some meaty and American oak notes. Taste: moderately thick and sweet, oaky, with some light roasted malt bitterness. Overall: well, it's ok, but I would prefer this year Boreas over this one.

16oz shared with Alex (thx for the beer, man!) @ home. Appearance: dark brown with a dark beige head. Aroma: mint (for whatever reason) and chocolate. Taste: moderately sweet, minty, some chocolate, and a bit of muted American oak. Overall: not sure what BC wanted to show by brewing this beer, but IMHO it's not really a good brew, considering their overall standards for Imperial Stout.

Can from The Gull, North Vancouver
Dark brown colour with thin head. It smells like a chocolate bar, but quite nice. This would have been a full bodied beer many years ago, but today we expect fuller bodies in a pastry stout; sweet; chocolate, coffee, roasted nuts; it finishes with a light slimy feeling given sometimes by lactose; the alcohol is too noticeable.
It's pretty close to the candy bar, but it's also one of the weaker offers from Backcountry, in its category.

Poured from 473mL can. Opaque gold with white head. Creamy tropical hops, hint of citrus, decent. Almost a touch muted, but still enjoyable.

473 ml can. Gusher on opening. Minus points for brewery issue. This type of beer should not have ongoing fermentation… Pours a very dark brown with little remaining head. Aromas of ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, black chocolate, vanilla and slick roasted malts. Flavors follow same though with more balance, spice vs malts, plus coconut. Not getting much barrel effects; maybe due to the spice still taking a lead. Quite a good beer ruined by the opening experience. (Otherwise a 3.9)

16oz shared @ Ryan's (thx for the beer, dude!) with Farees. Appearance: muddy brown with no head. Aroma: American oak, nice coffee, chocolate, vanilla. Taste: along the same lines, nice coffee and level. Overall: very nice.

Pours nice and black. Thin head. The bourbon is assertive, the base malts are pleasant. It's a big dip into the barrels, but this brings layers of vanilla, sugar, and wood that go beyond what prior editions of this beer achieved.
