Description
Maui Brewing Company was founded by Garrett Marrero and Melanie Oxley. They started as a single brew-pub, a small restaurant that served its own locally brewed beer in January 2005. Demand for the beer outgrew the space available in the brewpub and in 2007, Maui Brewing Company started producing and packaging beer out of a separate production facility. In 2012 Marrero and Oxley opened yet another larger production facility, which increased their capacity from 18,000 barrels of beer to almost 40,000 barrels.

(Can, Bishop’s Arms North, Stockholm) Hazy golden colour with brief, frothy, white head. Fruity, perfumy nose with notes of citrus, tropical fruit, pineapple and coriander. Fruity, perfumy taste with citrus, pineapple and a sweet, slightly sour wheat character with spicy hints of coriander. Medium body, very sweet, hardly detectable bitterness. Refreshing and tasty, but a touch too sweet and perfumy.

Can at Paul’s and Ryan’s tasting. Pours cloudy orange. Nose of fresh pineapple juice, pineapple rind, mango and wheat. Taste of fresh pineapple juice and wheat. Dryish finish. A true lawnmower beer.

Cloudy light golden white color. Thick white head. Nice coriander and orange peel nose. Nice mouth feel with lots of orange peel character. Very smooth, refreshing and slightly more body than a typical wit. Peppery. Well executed. Very enjoyable, would love to try in the Hawaiin sun, instead of the Yokohama snow.

Can from Brewdog Bar, Aberdeen. Pours a cloudy orange colour with low carbonation and a foamy white head. The nose is pine, varnish, red chilli, lime and grapefruit. The taste is initially full of citrus fruits (orange, lime, grapefruit, peach), leading to bread, wood and honey with a long bitter varnish finish. I found the beer to be well balanced and I’m impressed it tasted so good out of a can!

Deep pitch black coloured body with a thin, fast-dying tan head and an oily bit on the top of the beer. Aroma of strong permanent marker (sharpie), light coconut, a ton of roasted malt, nuts and a ton of anise. Light to Medium-bodied; Strong anise and roasted malt flavour with a lot of licorice and potent nuttiness behind. Aftertaste shows a lot of anise and roasted malt, a touch of the coconut and a long strong alcohol flavour. Overall, a good, strong porter (almost bordering on the strengths of a Baltic porter, just not in flavour) with a good anise and licorice (not so much coconut) taste. I sampled this twelve ounce can purchased from Olive Tree Market in Ocean Beach, San Diego, California for US$2.99 yesterday on 09-February-2011, sampled at home on the other coast in Washington on 10-February-2011.

Can from badnewsbeers. Deep brown body with reddish highlights, thin/medium tight beige head. Tannic nose with woody acidity and cocoa, also coffee. Sweet body, a tad woody, with cocoa and coffee, the sweet milky coconut featuring more prominently here than in the nose. Oily, slick palate, with fair complexity. A solid porter.

12oz can pours a nearly opaque black, black with some ruby edges, with a creamy, lacing beige head. Nose is nutty, malty, breads, grains, light chocolate, a little brown sugar, a little coffee. Flavor is nice, the toasted coconut actually comes through very nicely, it’s way up front with a toasty, sweet flavor. Plenty of sweetness, brown sugar, toasted malts, caramel, smooth coffee, molasses. Medium bodied, dry finish. Super drinkable, smooth and really unique. If this was at your regular pub, you’d drink it everyday.
