Description
Maui Brewing Company was founded by Garrett Marrero and Melanie Oxley. They started as a single brew-pub, a small restaurant that served its own locally brewed beer in January 2005. Demand for the beer outgrew the space available in the brewpub and in 2007, Maui Brewing Company started producing and packaging beer out of a separate production facility. In 2012 Marrero and Oxley opened yet another larger production facility, which increased their capacity from 18,000 barrels of beer to almost 40,000 barrels.

Dark brown colour. Sweet chocolate coconut nose. Very fudgey with lots of coconut. It’s very prominent but does integrate well. I wouldn’t call it "my thing" though.

12 oz. can generously given to me by Dansting. Pour is a deep cola brown with some ruby. Looks like a Black Cherry soda. Nice looking Khaki head. Aroma of toasted coconut primarily, with some roasted Porter underneath. Taste is mostly straight Porter, slight roast, flat coffee, some sweetness. Coconut is muted, and appears mostly in the finish. Once you are past the coconut, there is some lingering sourness. This was well made, the coconut flavor was integrated nicely. However, this really wasn’t totally my thing. Extra point for creativity. Thanks for hauling this one back and sharing Dan!

Can courtesy of a traveling colleague. It’s strange being a fan of craft year and being aware of the stigma beer has compared to let’s say wine. However, even knowing how off-base the bias is, I tend to apply a similar stigma to canned beer. This beer went a long way in breaking that stigma. Anyway, the beer pours a mostly clear dark amber-orange color with a thich and foamy light beige head that diminishes slowly. Small patches of lacing on the glass. Hoppy aroma with notes of citrus and malt. Medium-bodied with flavors of grapefruit, hops, toffee and malt. The finish is dry with a grassy hops aftertaste that lingers awhile. Solidly above average all around.

Canned (Thanks Bolagshataren!). Deep amber colour, not much head. Aroma is coffee, cocoa and some roasted malts. Flavour is roasted malts, some smoked wood, cocoa as well as mild notes of coffee. The coffee grows into the finish though. Aftertaste is a mix of coffee, roast and cocoa.

Canned, thanks Bolagshataren! Very black, small beige head. Non-surprising cocoa aroma. Sweet and very roasty, creamy and soft, near full bodied. Cocoa domintes coffee. Tarry bitter finish. Unusual, and quite interesting.

33 cL can, thanks to BierKönig. Pours dark and thick, almost black and with a huge chocolate brown head. Aroma is sweet and roasted with a soft note of chocolate, I don’t sense the coconut at all. Mouthfeel is vevelt soft, creamy. Very smooth chocolate flavour with some liqourice bite towards the finish. The beer remains soft into the finish but softly allows some bitterness to shine through. I may sense some coconut beneath the chocolate and in the smoothness, but it is by no means easy to tell. Very nice brew.
