Description

Unique beer, a strong dark ale, brewed with dates. It’s sweet, yeasty, malty and fruity in a special way. Very good.

I never knew a beer brewed with mustard could be good. But smisje proves in this weird brew that it can be tasty.

Cloudy golden coloured body with a nice, three centimetre tall just off-white head that fades very fast. Aroma of hops, tons of yeast, alcohol and a bunch of hay and grass - very nice and very floral. Light to Medium-bodied; Grassy and herbal hop notes with a ton of yeast, a bunch of hay and some lighter pepper and spice notes. Aftertaste shows some herbal notes throughout with some yeast and spice flavours, a ton of pepper, coriander seed and grains. Overall, a nice and very well rounded beer with tons of herbal and spice notes and still a lot of yeast. I sampled this 33 cL bottle purchased from de Bier Tempel in Bruges, Belgium on 14-August-2013 for €2,95 sampled in my hotel room across the border in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg on 18-August-2013.

Draft at Local Option served in a thinned Sint Christoffel glass. Cloudy and thick orange and red colored beer with a long lasting head. Aroma is acetic prune earth, acetic grounded in some soily maltiness. Its earthy and nice and the acetic character beefs that up without being overbearing. Flavor is a leafy soil with acetic touches and a cherry pit component. Some lactic sourness as well. Long earthy cherry after taste. Almost like a Scottish Flanders Ale. Some alcohol peaks through it all as well. Nice stuff. Always interesting from this brewery.

Bottle at Bruce’s thanks to jackl. It pours hazy/murky deep amber with a medium beige head. The nose is sweet baked goods, brown sugar, crème brulee, vanilla, rice pudding and apple. The taste is caramel, toffee, earth, toast, preserved fruit, fig, prune, passion fruit and dried apple. Medium to full body and fine carbonation with alcohol warmth in the finish. Well integrated flavour. Decent.

Bottle shared at Bruce’s, London - big thanks to the honorable Jack. Pours murky golden-brown with a frothy, tam head. Some tangy fruits in the nose, bread, caramel. Medium sweet flavor, lots of leathery fruits, dry and toasty caramel, bread. Full bodied with fine, spritzy carbonation. Warm finish, some boozy kick, caramel, toast, light earthy bitterness, some citrus, more leathery fruits. Decent beer.

(Bottle, 0.33 l, at Cafe Thembi, Maastricht, 20130603) The beer poured reddish brown and hazy. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had malts, chcolate and caramell. Palate was medium bodied and warming with a lot of carbonation. Flavours were malts, sweetness, chocolate, caramell, dried plum and bitterness. Aftertaste was sweet and malty. Alcohol was a bit too much present but the otherwise the beer was pretty good and balanced.
