Description
Not only was Dogfish Head Delaware’s first brewpub, it was the smallest commercial brewery in America. With our very first batches brewed on a system that was essentially three little kegs with propane burners underneath, we were brewing 12–gallon batches of beer for a whole restaurant. It proved to be more than a full time job and when the doors to the brewpub first opened, we brewed three times a day, five days a week! The benefit? Brewing on such a small system gave us the ability to try out a myriad of different recipes. Insert ‘off-centered ales for off-centered people.’ Our hunger for weird ingredients and venturing off the beaten path was just getting started.

Fast-forward to today and we’re still motivated by non-conformity. By spontaneity. By experimentation.

At every turn, our restless desire to create what hasn’t yet been imagined keeps us bringing new stories, new tastes, and new experiences to you.

Because we don’t jump on the bandwagon, we are the funky drummer.

Every day is an exploration. A thoughtful search through a crowded world, we search for that thing that makes us pause - that idea that excites us, the inspiration we can’t ignore. The journey can be unpredictable … but that’s what makes it kind of magical.

If you haven’t had the chance to taste Dogfish Head, find a beer, track down one of our spirits or visit one of our restaurants! You’ll quickly see why international beer writer Michael Jackson called Dogfish Head "America's most interesting and adventurous small brewery."

12 oz can purchased at Total Wine in Overland Park, Kansas. JUL 2026 D 013 6 2251 11 stamped on the bottom of the can, which I believe means this was packaged on Jan 13, 2026. The pour is a hazed yellow golden with a two inch white foamy head that falls quickly with some splotchy lace. The aroma is cereal malt and some lemon peel soft bitter. Fresh, though pretty basic. The taste is a nice clean blend of the cracker malt flavor and the softly lemon peel citrus bitter floral hop. The palate is light bodied, soft natural carbonation and clean crisp softly bitter finish. Easy drinking beer.

My 100th Dogfish Head beer rating. Jet black pour. Finger-high creamy tan head. Aromas of sweet roasted malt, oak and whiskey. Perhaps a hint of chocolate and smoke, as well. Waiting for a few minutes before taking the first sip to allow the brew to warm slightly. First sip brings rich sweet notes of bittersweet chocolate and exotic vanilla. Bold notes of fortified wine, oak, whiskey and treacle. Of course, the intense booziness comes through as expected. This is a rich, complex brew, and a perfect choice to represent my 100th DFH rating..

AROMA: Mildly sweet, with scents of coffee and a hint of caramel, at the end. Oddly, I find the coffee scent to be more like used coffee grinds, rather than fresh beans.

APPEARANCE: Pours an opaque black with a 3-finger, tight-frothed, dirty-tan head that dissipates very slowly with excellent lacing. It looks very nice!

TASTE: At beginning of a sip, I get moderate sweetness with a fair amount of espresso that is followed by some light notes of cream and a touch of caramel. Sadly, other than a bit of coffee flavor, it doesn't really have much else to offer. And I find that the sweetness doesn't really mesh with the rest of the flavor profile.

MOUTHFEEL: Thin-bodied with a slightly coarse texture. Carbonation is below average. Finish is mildly dry.

OVERALL: Appearance is great. Aroma and Flavor are just okay. Mouthfeel is lacking. While I find the idea of the beer to be compelling, the actual execution leaves me flat. I'm glad I tried it, but I won't be buying again.
