Handpull cask at the Kings Head, Leicester. Very, very dark brown with a decent-sized khaki head. Aroma of roasted coffee, a little bit of blackberry. Taste is sweet, fruity with undertones of Turkish coffee and liquorice. Bitterness in the aftertaste: soured berry juice and too-strong espresso. It's not quite comfortable in its own skin but I love it all the same.

Handpull cask at the Pig & Pump, Chesterfield. Mid-brown and clear with a lacing-inducing off-white head. Biscuity aroma, some woody notes and light turps. Tastes bittersweet with a nice oaky character. Light to medium ou body, soft to nil carbonation. Hmmm. I like a lot of these craftier bitters but something is missing with this one. Like someone explained a traditional bitter to an AI chatbot and they brewed this. I mean, it is decent enough but just feels like there is little soul.

Half-pint on-tap in Cherry Red on 8th November 2024. Refreshing pale lager, usual clean and clear lager look, white crown that faded. Crisp and dry (but like the Cooking Oil of that name). It's fine and what I needed after a long crawl around Birmingham.

Hand-pulled half-pint in the Boot on 31st October 2024. Tanned crown on a black body, looked good. Tasted fine too, malty, smooth and rich but earthy too. Leather and liquorice within the mild coffee flavours. I actually liked it, but it was a little 'odd'.

Keg, half-pint at the Pheasant Inn and Brewhouse on 27th October 2024. Hazed golden orange colour, white head. Semi-sweet citrus fruits abound, semi-bitter finish.

Cask at the Waggon & Horses, Stourbridge at 4%. Pours jet black with a small head. Aroma is caramel, roast and coffee. Taste has yeasty roast and caramel.

440ml can from the brewery. Poured a hazy yellow golden colour with a short-lived, frothy white head. The aroma is grainy malt, tropical citrus. The flavour is moderate bitter and sweet, with a fresh, crisp, juicy lemon citrus, dry hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation.

Cask at the brewery. Poured almost black in colour with a lasting frothy tan head. The aroma is roasted malt. The flavour is light liquorice bitter, with a light, watery, earthy, yeasty, light liquorice bitter palate. Medium to light bodied with soft carbonation. Disappointing.

Tap at the brewery. Poured almost black in colour with an everlasting frothy light tan head. The aroma is roasted malt, light caramel. The flavour is liquorice bitter, with a smooth, somewhat rich, roasty, earthy, light dry ashtray, big liquorice bitter palate. Over medium bodied with average to soft carbonation. I’d love to know what my late grandfather would have thought of this. I think he would have approved!
