Draft at the source. Clear brown color, tan head. Aroma is fruity, rooty, roasty. Taste is herbal and roasty. I didn’t care much for the beer, but I did learn something from the hipster name. According to the Wine Spectator, via Wikipedia, "for centuries, a rite of passage for French gourmets was the eating of the Ortolan. These tiny birds—captured alive, force-fed, then drowned in Armagnac—were roasted whole and eaten that way, bones and all, while the diner draped his head with a linen napkin to preserve the precious aromas and, some believe, to hide from God." I still don’t like the fact that the name tells me absolutely nothing about the beer, but it’s an interesting story (that must be true, since it’s repeated on the internet).

Draft at the source. Jet black color, thick brown head like the crema atop a good espresso. Nice aroma of smoky espresso. Taste is smooth, rich sweet caramel and coffee. Good body, something rarely seen in a coffee beer. Our tasting group was divided on this one, but I loved it because it was head and shoulders above most other coffee beers I’ve tried. And because I had visited Loco Joe’s that morning and loved it. AND because the name of the beer gave me hints of what the beer would be like - no crap hipster mystery name!

Draft at the source. Cloudy brown color, tan head. Aroma of nicely spiced fruitcake. Taste is roasty chocolate covered cherries. I think I’m going to start subtracting one appearance point for all beers with stupid hispter names that tell you absolutely nothing about teh beer itself.

Draft at the source. Poured a dark brown, dark muddy color with a small creamy tan head. Aroma was fruit, ginger notes. Light cherry tart (like an actual tart), some spice notes, cranberries. lots of cherry. interesting.

Draft at the source. Poured a mostly clear golden yellow color with a small off-white head. Aroma had some apple, some light Belgian spice notes. Flavor was a little bit of some apple notes.

Draft at the source. Poured a cloudy yellow color with a wispy white head. Aroma was light ginger notes, some wheat comes through. Flavor was mild ginger, sweet raw grains. Interesting.

Draft at the brewery. Poured a very dark color, almost pitch black, with a thick tan head. Profile of the beer looks like actual espresso. Aroma was nice caramel, vanilla notes. Roasted coffee. Plenty of caramel notes, caramel macchiato notes.

Keg at the brewery. Dark brown with a large creamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of bubblegum, stone fruit, mild ginger. The taste is stone fruit, bubblegum, cherries. Medium bodied, lingering fruit, alcohol well hidden.

Nitro at the brewery. Pours near black with a large creamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of french vanilla gas station coffee with a bit of roast and caramel. The taste is the same with mild dark fruits and roasted malt. Medium bodied, low carbonation, decent balance.
