Maenhout’s quadrupel from a 75 cl bottle bought at Van Eetvelde. Cloudy coppery brown colour with ochre hue, cloudy, less dark than expected; creamy, lacing, stable, off-white head. Aroma of brown sugar, rotting pear, banana, orange liqueur, caramel, cooked red cabbage, medlar, very sweet honey, bread and wodka-like alcohol. Very sweet taste, cloying candi syrup, soft carbo, banana, peach and candied dates, honeyish and caramelly malt sweetness, full and fluffy mouthfeel, some earthy hop bitterishness in the finish but not nearly enough to balance out the brown sugar sweetness - clearly fermentation has not finished here; some brown rhum-like alcohol plays in the end too, badly hidden even for a 10% ABV beer and even a bit burning in the end. Way too sweet for my taste: seems like an attempt to imitate La Trappe Quadrupel, very sweet already, and failing at doing so. Needs a lot more work!
