Description

24/VIII/21 - 33cl bottle from Beers@MovieFun (Brugge), shared @ summer holiday in France, BB: 4/III/23 (2021-957)

Clear to little cloudy orange beer, small creamy off-white head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: upon opening there’s quite some sulphur present, then after a while I’m getting more citrus notes, grapefruit and even some tropical fruits. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: some sweet malts up front, followed by bitter hoppy citrus notes. Aftertaste: turns into bitter grapefruit, lemon grassy, very dry and bitter citrus finish. Not bad, not a great IPA either. At least it’s nice and bitter, but could have some more aroma to it.

Special version of Maenhout's quadrupel Ferre (named after a 17th century Flemish missionary), aged for half a year on oak chips and infused with whisky. Medium thick, moussy, large-bubbled, stable, somewhat creamy, pale greyish beige head on an initially crystal clear, reddish coppery-mahogany brown beer, turning hazy with sediment. Aroma of hard caramel, indeed whisky, raisins, brown sugar, a whiff of oak wood, bubblegum, soggy toast, pecan nut, tea, dates. Sweet onset, fig and raisin notes, some banana, fizzy carbonation with supple body - feeling considerably lighter than expected at this strength; a 'blonde' sugary sweetness remains draped over a caramelly and brown-bready maltiness, but does not become too sticky anywhere. Some herbal hop bitterishness in the finish, flanked by indeed an oaky wood flavour (vague vanilla - yet soft in tannins) and, as expected, quite some boozy whisky, heating the throat yet somehow managing to avoid unpleasant wryness. A toasty-bitter malt accent lingers alongside a sweet sugary remnant. Relatively well balanced and less in-your-face than I was fearing as I do not usually like liquor-infused beers; the very classic quadrupel profile of the basic beer is as good as intact and only a bit 'embellished' with boozy whisky and subtle oakiness. Not too bad, but not stellar either - like the regular.

Bottle from Beers@Moviefun, Bruges. Variation on the regular Ferre with actual added whisky and American and French oak chips. Clear red-amber, thin, frothy, off-white head. Aroma of candied red apple, dried fig, dried orange peel, bourbon, vanilla, toffee, brown rum, burnt sugar. Taste has sweet fig, red apple, orange peel, sourish berry accent in a deep toffee & slightly nutty malty profile; bit herbal, woody & spicy in the middle. Herbal hoppy finish, pronounced vanilla & wood, lingering candied fruits and boozy bourbon alcohol. Medium body, oily texture, fizzy carbonation. Not an overly sweet Quad with sufficient woody notes, it's unfortunate the label fails to mention which whisky was used. I expected a bit more, a more 'rounded' experience, but Gouden Carolus Whisky Infused already set the bar high. Must have cellaring potential so might grab again...

Golden colour with lasting lacy head. Aroma and flavour have a lot of floral hops. Some citrus too. Lime zest. There's a background sweetness to this one giving a kind of key lime pie or lemon meringue feel to it too. Nice and interesting.

Medium, dense & fine, just off-white head; clear, finely carbonated old golden beer. Caramel, Petite Beurre, biscuit, dust, Café Noir coating. Sweet, maltsyrup, even honey-like. Finish has a cigarette ash vector. Feels better carbonated than it looks. Slick, medium bodied. Ho-hum. Mémé is a bit too sweet, the old hag. Thanks to Stef!
