Description
Altes beer is a Detroit original. Born at the Tivoli Brewery at the corner of Mack and Hurlbut on Detroit’s East Side, Altes was known as “the beer that bewitches” in 1910. European trained brew masters modeled the brand after the crisp refreshing lagers of their homeland, made for the hardworking Detroit boom town. Altes was the beer of choice for many hardworking Detroiters by the time Prohibition hit in 1919, and according to legend it was still brewed during the dry years and sold at speakeasies across town. It was an immediate regional favorite after the beer ban was lifted in 1933. Altes grew with Detroit, becoming the brisk beer with sealed in flavor by the 1940s. Favored by sportsmen and factory workers alike, the brewery sold over half a million barrels in 1947. By the 60’s Altes was a key Detroit brand, sponsoring the Detroit Lions and the Detroit Tigers, and launching Fassbier – with an always fresh draft beer taste.

Craft brewed in Detroit and locally owned again, Altes is Back! In 2016, three local beer lovers, Eric, Carl, and Pat, launched an effort to restore the beer to its original glory. They wanted to emulate the original refreshing European style Altes lager that Detroiters loved. So they turned to our friends at Traffic Jam & Snug, the original Detroit brewpub, to perfect an approach to creating a full bodied but perfectly balanced German Helles lager. The resulting recipe cuts no corners. We use 100% barley malt and 100% German imported hops to create a supremely drinkable local Detroit lager that honors the city's beer heritage.

Draft at 8 Degrees Plato. Pours a clear gold with a finger of white, soapy head that lingers. Bready malt, honey and sweet malt aromas. Easy drinking on the palate, very little to no bitterness leaving it a bit sweet after a few sips. Finishes pretty sweet for a lager, but still okay. Would like more peppery hop notes, but this really isn't that though, is it?

12 ounce can into lager glass, canned on 4/18/2019. Pours slightly hazy pale golden yellow color with a 1 finger dense and rocky off white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of lemon, cracker, white bread dough, toasted biscuit, light corn, wood, pepper, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. A bit of fruity/yeasty aromas, but not overwhelming. Nice aromas with good balance of pale malt/grains and moderate earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big lemon, cracker, white bread dough, toasted biscuit, light corn, wood, pepper, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of lemon, cracker, white bread dough, toasted biscuit, light corn, wood, pepper, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great robustness and balance of pale malt/grains and moderate earthy hop flavors; with an awesome malt/bitterness balance, and no astringent hop flavors after the finish. Fairly crisp/clean finishing. Very clean on lager flavors, with minimal fruity/yeasty notes present. Moderate increasing dryness from lingering bitterness and carbonation. Medium-plus carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth and moderately bready/grainy/sticky balanced mouthfeel that is fantastic. Light lingering resins through the glass. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.2%. Overall this is an excellent American pre-prohibition lager. All around great robustness and balance of pale malt/grains and moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth, refreshing, and fairly crisp/clean to drink with the modestly bitter/drying finish. Very flavorful and not watery for the ABV. Very clean and nicely rich pils malt/grain showcase, with great earthy noble hop/presence for the style. Mild on the adjuncts. A very enjoyable offering, and impressive style example.
